The 2019 Formula 1 campaign gets underway with Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix and defending world champion Lewis Hamilton admits Mercedes have "work to do" after seeing Ferrari set the standard in testing.

Sebastian Vettel set a new testing record on the final day of testing in Barcelona last week, capping off a highly-successful stint in Catalunya, and although Hamilton was not far behind his title rival the five-time world champion believes his team are playing catch-up heading into the season-opener.

“It’s a long season, so I don’t particularly feel that (pressure to win on Sunday),” he told reporters. “The most important thing, I think, is really about finishing races and analysing and making sure you get as many race points as you can, of course.

“It’s difficult to know what everyone's doing. Naturally we won’t fully know until we get out in the car tomorrow and come qualifying you get a better picture. We said that we had work to do, we weren’t talking BS… we have work to do.”

But is Hamilton on the money with his assessment?

The bookmakers believe the answer to that question is ‘yes’ because they have installed Vettel as the favourite to win the first race of the 2019 season.

Vettel has been victorious in each of the past two seasons in Melbourne and Ladbrokes is 7/4 about the German driver making it three-in-a-row on Sunday, with Hamilton considered the 5/2 favourite ahead the other Ferrari, driven by Charles Leclerc, at 2/1.

However, looking at the big picture the firm does expect Hamilton to once again overcome a slow start to claim the drivers’ championship.

The British driver has not won this race since 2015, but he has won the world championship in each of the past two seasons and Ladbrokes is 5/4 that he wins it this time around too, with Vettel his main rival at 13/8 ahead of Leclerc at 9/2.
