Can anyone stop Lewis Hamilton in 2019? Bookies weigh in after Mercedes ace dominates in Abu Dhabi

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up another successful Formula 1 campaign by dominating the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, and the bookmakers are confident he will continue his dominance of the sport in 2019.

Hamilton did not enjoy the best form during the first half of the season as he won just three of the first nine races, but title rival Sebastian Vettel failed to take advantage of that to allow the Mercedes ace to stay within touching distance and once the Briton upstaged in the German in his home grand prix, it was all over.

Hamilton made it back-to-back Hockenheimring victories as Vettel endured a day to forget, retiring from the race, and that victory was the start of an outstanding run of form for the British ace as he won seven of the remaining 10 races to finish 88 points clear of the Ferrari man – the biggest winning margin he has enjoyed in five F1 title successes.

The world champion was able to wrap up his successful 2018 campaign with one last victory as he led from lights to flag in Abu Dhabi, but when asked about his title chances for 2019 the five-time drivers’ champion insisted he had not thought much about it.

“I've not really thought a lot about next year,” he told Sky Sports F1. “There are days, just being human, you can wish days by, but then I don't want to wish the time away because it goes really quick.

“I wanted to end the season strong, and on a personal level I was able to do that. The team have done an exceptional job. I wanted to end the way that I plan to start next year. It was a strong weekend that I was really happy with.

“I don't think it's been a year particularly of one thing that's been learned [this season]. I've understood myself better as I've gone on. As you make mistakes, you learn from them. I've been able to be a better me all year long, and I’m never going to stop trying to do that. I've loved every minute of driving today.”

While Hamilton has not been thinking of 2019 the bookmakers have and, unsurprisingly, bookmaker bet365 has made the world champion the 8/11 favourite to win a sixth drivers’ title in 2019, with Vettel considered his main rival at 10/3 ahead of 9/1 Max Verstappen.

Ferrari newcomer Charles Leclerc, at 9/1, is the only other driver shorter than 10s, with Valtteri Bottas, at 14/1, the only other driver shorter than 28s following a disappointing 2018 season that saw the Mercedes No. 2 fail to win a single race.
