The world championship battle goes down to the wire as Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton fight for the Formula 1 drivers’ title in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – but who will be victorious and will our man Leigh Copson end a profitable season with another F1 winner or two.
It has been a rollercoaster season for the two Mercedes driver. Rosberg made a blistering start to the season only to see Hamilton hit his stride and overhaul him in the title race prior to the mid-season break. However, when the 2016 campaign resumed Hamilton endured a string of disappointments – a grid penalty and technical problems – and Rosberg took full advantage to move back to the top of the standings and open up a commanding lead once again. Hamilton has given himself a glimmer of hope by winning each of the last three races, but Rosberg has done his best to limit the damage each time and that means he takes a 12-point lead into the final race of the year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The German will be crowned world champion for the first time if he finishes in the top three, while Hamilton needs to win the race and hope that his rival finishes outside of the top three. If the Briton does not win, he will require Rosberg to finish fourth or lower depending on Hamilton’s final placing. Therefore it is rather understandable that Rosberg is the 1/5 favourite to win the title with bet365
, and even Hamilton – a 10/3 shot – knows he is up against it in his quest for a third straight title.
“Right now, it is going to be very hard to beat him but it doesn't mean I can't win the race,” Hamilton told reporters. “I am going to take the energy I have at the moment and really try to push as hard as I can in that race to get as far ahead and that is all I can do.”
So will Hamilton keep his winning run going to give himself a shot at another world championship? And, more importantly for us, will the Bettingpro.com team enjoy one final profitable weekend betting on Formula 1? Lewis Hamilton’s success in Brazil a fortnight ago means we have now had at least one winning bet on 16 of the 20 races so far this season, and here are the bets we expect to deliver more success in the last race of 2016.
The first of those is backing Hamilton to win a fourth straight race at 8/13 with bet365
. In Rosberg’s dreams he will take the chequered flag to be crowned world champion in style, but the simple fact is he does not need to win the race. The 31-year-old has never won the championship before so he will not be planning on taking any unnecessary risks that could make him wait at least one more year. All the pressure is on Hamilton to take the chequered flag and he will be going all out to win Sunday’s season finale. I expect him to do just that, but it will not be enough.

My final recommendation comes in the form of a familiar figure – Daniel Ricciardo. The 27-year-old is showing all the makings of being a world champion in future – if he has the right car of course – and despite his eighth-placed finish in Brazil he has been a model of consistency during the second half of the season with seven podium finishes in his last 10 races. I believe he will wrap up a career-best campaign with a strong showing in Abu Dhabi, and Ladbrokes’
13/8 about him in the Without Rosberg & Hamilton market looks rather good to me.
