Lewis Hamilton is the odds-on favourite to win Sunday’s British Grand Prix after setting the pace in qualifying once again.

Hamilton is aiming to halt Nico Rosberg’s recent resurgence by taking the chequered flag at Silverstone, and the Mercedes ace helped his cause on Saturday as he once again set the standard in qualifying – despite looking out of sorts at times during the three stages.

Hamilton sealed his eighth pole position of the season as he clocked 1min 32.248secs in Q3, and bet365 make him the 1/3 favourite to follow that up with his fifth race win of the season on Sunday.

“It's a special day. When you see all those fans out there, so many people they really do motivate me,” Hamilton told reporters afterwards. “It is special when you do get the pole.

“Generally it has not been the smoothest of weekends. I made a change in the car before qualifying which hopefully will be good for the race. Once I got to Q3 I could go all out, and I am incredibly happy. Big thank you to everyone for the support.”

Hamilton’s team-mate and world title rival, Rosberg, will start from second on the grid after he registered a best time of 1min 32.361secs, and the German driver will not be too downhearted despite failing to out-pace Hamilton in qualifying.

Rosberg has managed just one pole position all season, but he has now won three of the last four races to close the gap in the Driver’s Championship to 10 points, and at 9/4 bet365 would not be shocked to see him upstage the Briton on his home circuit on Sunday.

The Williams pairing of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas fill the second row at Silverstone, with the Ferrari duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel taking the third row.

Vettel is the only non-Mercedes driver to win a race this season, but bet365 do not fancy his chances of winning for the second time this season, with the former world champion a 25/1 alongside Raikkonen, Bottas and Massa.
