Wolves v Pyunik

Wolves’ return to Europe has gone smoothly so far and they go into the second leg of this third qualifying round tie with Pyunik boasting a commanding lead after a comprehensive 4-0 win in Armenia a week ago. It took until just before the half-an-hour mark for Wolves to get ahead through a Matt Doherty effort, but it was all over by the 46th minute as Raul Jimenez struck either side of the interval, with Ruben Neves’ added-time penalty adding some gloss and all but securing a place in the play-off round of Europa League qualifying.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Santo said afterwards. “They started the game very strong and created us a lot of problems. [They are] a good team with good players and that was the time for us to be organised, be patient and stay in shape. After that we started moving the ball and trying to create gaps and spaces. I’m happy.”

Santo went on to insist that the tie is far from over despite his team’s four-goal lead, but is anybody really buying those comments from the Portuguese? Wolves took a giant stride towards the final round of qualifying and it would be a gigantic shock if they did not advance here. In fact, it would be a major surprise if they did not wrap things up with one more win here. For me it is not a case of will Wolves win, more how will they run out winners in the return meeting at Molineux?

It would be very easy to predict that they will run riot like they did in Armenia and perhaps top that four-goal showing in the first leg, but there is one big factor that is making me doubt the chances of that happening. Wolves do not need to win this match and Santo will almost certainly have one eye on his team’s next couple of fixtures – Monday night’s visit of Manchester United and the weekend home game against Burnley. After dropping points at Leicester City on opening weekend, Santo will be keen to see his side get off the mark in the Premier League asap and that could result in him making the most of an opportunity to rest some of his star names for this return clash with Pyunik.

I do not expect to see the Portuguese rest everyone on Thursday night, but I do expect to see a few of his better players sit this one out while some fringe players get an opportunity to shine. A ‘weakened’ Wolves line-up should still be too strong for Pyunik though, and while I am confident that they will do just that, I do not believe that they will top the four goals they racked up in Armenia. I do not like the chances of the visitors scoring either, so with all of this in mind I find myself drawn to backing Wolves to win a match that sees less than 4.5 total goals.
