Wigan Athletic v Southampton Predictions

Wigan Athletic v Southampton Betting Tips Explained

Southampton go into this cup tie with a new manager at the helm after they replaced the axed Mauricio Pellegrino with Mark Hughes on Wednesday night. And while his debut outing as Saints boss will not be against one of English football’s elite in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Hughes could not have asked for a much worse tie than a trip to face a Wigan Athletic side that have already killed three giants and claimed the biggest scalp of them all in this competition so far.

Only an added time goal denied Wigan a 2-1 win at Bournemouth in round three, but they took their second chance in emphatic fashion as they ran out 3-0 winners in the replay, and they claimed an even bigger scalp in the fourth round when Will Grigg bagged a brace in a 2-0 win over West Ham United. That victory set up a fifth-round showdown with runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City and few gave Paul Cook’s side much hope of beating a City team that had lost just one domestic game heading into the meeting at the DW Stadium.

However, the Latics pulled off one of the biggest FA Cup upsets of all time as Will Grigg’s solitary goal lifted them to a 1-0 win over a loaded City line-up, and they will now look to secure a place in the semi-finals of the world’s oldest cup competition by ousting a top-flight team for the fourth round running. But can they do it? Of course they can.

Southampton make the trip to the DW Stadium in sorry shape. Pellegrino was given the boot in the wake of a dreadful 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United a week ago and he has left behind a team that have been woeful on their travels this season, recording only four wins away from St Mary’s in all competitions. They have hardly been prolific in front of goal this season too – they offered no real threat up at Newcastle – and that spells trouble against a resolute and well-drilled Wigan defence that were able to shut out Sergio Aguero & Co in the last round and have now kept clean sheets against three Premier League teams in this competition this season.

One goal could prove to be enough to get the job done here, but simply backing Wigan to win in 90 minutes offers a good enough return - I just do not see Hughes immediately turning this around in the space of a couple of days. And if you are not completely sold on the Latics pulling off the upset on Sunday, I still suggest backing this match to be a low-scoring affair. Southampton are not going to run riot here so no matter what the result is, this quarter-final tie is unlikely to see more than two goals.
