West Ham United v Arsenal Betting Tips Explained

The David Moyes Era at the London Stadium is up and running thanks to a shock 1-0 win over champions Chelsea at the weekend. West Ham United went into the match having picked up just one point from their first four games under the former Sunderland boss, but a strong showing in the defeat to league leaders Manchester City inspired some confidence that he could turn things around and the Hammers will have added to that belief with a solid display and three huge points at the weekend.

Marko Arnautovic’s early strike proved to be the difference as West Ham showed plenty of resolve at the back and some endeavour up front, and afterwards Moyes declared his side’s showing had proved the London club are “on their way back” after a difficult first few months of the season that ultimately cost ex-boss Slaven Bilic his job.

They now have an opportunity to pull off another upset when they entertain London rivals Arsenal on Wednesday night. The Gunners arrive on the back of another disappointing away day that saw them need a late Olivier Giroud goal to snatch a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday. Arsene Wenger’s men have now won only two of their eight away matches in the Premier League this season, losing four of them, and that will be a major concern for the Frenchman because it could prove to be the difference between a return to the Champions League or perhaps another campaign in the Europa League.

They have an ideal fixture in which to try to improve their home record on Wednesday night. West Ham may have been buoyed by that win over Chelsea, but the simple fact is Arsenal have absolutely owned them in recent years, winning 15 of the last 19 encounters and losing just once. They out-scored the Hammers 8-1 as they won both meetings last season and the Gunners have now gone over 11 years without losing an away match against West Ham – a fantastic record. West Ham will not be the pushover they were a few weeks ago, but ultimately I do expect Arsenal to return to winning ways at the former Olympic Stadium.

Do not be shocked if West Ham grab a goal though. They have, of course, just scored in meetings with Manchester City and Chelsea, and they have failed to score in just one of their eight competitive home games despite their struggles so far. Arsenal, meanwhile, have had problems keeping the ball out of their own net on their travels this season – only eight top-flight teams have conceded more goals away from home – and they looked very shaky at the back at times during that draw at Southampton. The Hammers can capitalise on that to score here, but it will not be enough to avoid defeat.

And for my second recommendation, I suggest backing Alexis Sanchez to find the back of the net. The Chilean forward has failed to get on the scoresheet in recent weeks, but he does have a very healthy knack for scoring goals away from home. Sanchez has scored in two of Arsenal’s last four away games and 17 of his 30 competitive goals in 2016/17 were netted away from the Emirates Stadium. It is only a matter of time before he gets back on the goal trail and it could be here – he has, after all, scored four goals in his last two games at West Ham United.
