At least two of the so called ‘big boys’ were going to have to meet in one of the semi-finals in the FA Cup, and so it transpired that Tottenham were drawn alongside Manchester United in the heavyweight tie of the round.

Manchester United by contrast have been struggling in recent weeks. Jose Mourinho’s men were forced to stomach an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the Champions League as they were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford. Whereas Spurs were naïve in a five-minute spell during their game as they still received some encouragement from losing to such a seasoned European team, Manchester United were knocked out on the back of an awful performance that lacked energy, desire and commitment.

Mourinho’s men returned to form somewhat on Saturday as they walked past a Brighton side that barely threatened to make a game of it in their FA Cup quarter-final. Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic proved more than enough on the day and United are now looking forward to a trip to Wembley Stadium. Mourinho’s men are looking to put a run of form behind them that has seen them knocked out of the Champions League, while they have also lost ground on leaders Manchester City in the league. Their season hangs in the balance then as they look to clinch an FA Cup that would see their current campaign classed as only a minor disappointment, rather than a major one if they were to fail to pick up a trophy.

Tottenham were able to romp to one of the easier wins in the quarter-finals as they dismantled Swansea in a 3-0 win. A Christian Eriksen double along with Erik Lamela’s strike saw the London side run out 3-0 winners as they booked their place in the semi-final with ease. Swansea’s impressive run in the Premier League counted for little in the end, although they are still very much battling for their lives in England’s top league, and perhaps that showed in what was an insipid performance form the Welsh side.

Spurs were recently dumped out of the Champions League by an experienced Juventus side as the London team’s inexperience shone through. With their Premier League campaign proving to be another trophy less one along with their failure in the EFL Cup, the FA Cup has become Mauricio Pochettino’s last chance to get his hands on some silverware this season. Of course, they still have a massive job to do in the league as the Champions League places are incredibly hotly contested. However, Spurs have a healthy sized squad and they will feel that, unlike a team in Southampton’s position, they can adequately share their focus between the two objectives. Form wise, Spurs are currently enjoying a run of just a single defeat in their last 20 games, which was to Juventus in the Champions League. To say Tottenham are on a good run would be a massive understatement.

With the two sides so evenly matched, this is a very tough one to call. There has to be a winner, but the injury to Harry Kane along with Mourinho’s experience in the biggest matches will be a huge factor in this FA Cup semi-final.
