Can England get back to winning ways after they threw everything away against Holland, or will Switzerland secure third-place in the competition? Read on for our best bets for this UEFA Nations League clash.

The wheels suddenly came off for Gareth Southgate and his team on Thursday evening as his England side were guilty of giving everything away in their clash with the Netherlands. A Marcus Rashford penalty came against the run of play but it saw England go into half-time a goal up. However, a lack of real intent in the second-half and Dutch pressure saw Matthijs de Ligt power home a header to set up extra-time. England had looked better in the early stages of the extra 30, but rookie errors from John Stones and Ross Barkley saw the Dutch score two more goals and consign England to defeat in the most painful way possible.

While being architects of their own downfall will hurt the Three Lions right now, it will be good for them in the long run. Stones and Barkley were guilty of trying to keep the ball and play out from the back, with these mistakes happening to even the best teams, such is the danger of playing such a game. Southgate will look to ensure that lessons are learnt from these errors, but their style will remain the same, with this desire to keep the ball something that has served England well in recent months.

Switzerland meanwhile suffered a similar fate to England as they fell to a 3-1 loss to Portugal. A Ricardo Rodriguez penalty cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s 25th minute effort, but two late goals from Ronaldo completed his hat-trick and ensured the Portuguese took the first available place in the final. The Swiss had looked good in the game as they kept more than half of the ball whilst recording 16 total shots, but they were beaten by an inspired showing from the man made for knock-out football.

In this one, England are the favourites at 21/10 with BetVictor, while Switzerland are 12/5 to secure victory. Honestly, we feel England should win this one as they are a far better team than the Swiss. England currently sit in fourth in the world rankings while the Swiss are eighth, while Switzerland have been incredibly poor against England in recent times as they have not beaten the English since May 1981, with England winning eight of the other 11 since then, while the Three Lions are on a three game winning run against their opponents. With this in mind, we simply cannot look to back against England despite their struggles against the Dutch, with their loss to their opponents something born out of their own mistake rather than them simply not being good enough. Of course, Southgate will need to ensure that England do not continue to take massive risks just to keep the ball, but things still look promising for England, and they will want to ensure they secure third-place in the competition which would see them finish one place better off than they managed in the 2018 World Cup.
