Steve Bruce’s appointment as Newcastle United manager has gone down like a lead balloon with the club’s beleaguered supporters, and bookmakers have responded by offering short odds on him failing to see out a full season at St James’ Park.

The departure of Rafael Benitez this summer was a huge blow to Newcastle and supporters had been hoping to see their club land a notable replacement, but instead they are coming to terms with the appointment of journeyman manager Bruce, who ended a brief stint with Sheffield Wednesday this week.

“I’m delighted and incredibly proud to be appointed as head coach of Newcastle United,” Bruce said in a statement on the club’s official website. “This is my boyhood club and it was my dad’s club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family.

“There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it’s one that my staff and I are ready for. We’ll roll our sleeves up and we’ll be giving it everything from the off to ensure supporters have a successful team that they can be proud of.”

Bruce is talking a good game, but supporters, punters and bookmakers are not buying it, with the hashtag #BruceOut trending on social media within minutes of the club confirming his appointment.

The bookmakers, meanwhile, have quickly predicted ‘doom & gloom’ for his reign!

Betway is just 6/4 that the former defender has departed the club by the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, while it is only 4/1 that he fails to see out this calendar year and leaves St James’ Park before January 1, 2020.

There has also been a flurry of support for Newcastle to be relegated following his appointment, forcing the firm to trim its odds from 10/3 to 9/4.

“Steve Bruce has been made Newcastle manager but is already backed at 6/4 to face the axe before the end of the 2019/20 season,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com.

“Bruce has never overseen a top flight major trophy win so it’s little surprise that he’s as big as 12/1 to win one with Newcastle.”
