Sporting Club v Vitória Setúbal live stream & tips - Lions eye top spot

  • Sporting can go top with win
  • Lisbon looking to set up thrilling climax to Primeira Liga season

Sporting Club can stay in the hunt for the Primeira Liga title with victory over Vitória Setúbal on Saturday evening.

Sporting welcome Vitória to Estádio José Alvalade seeking their eighth straight win in the Portuguese top flight, which would see them move a point above leaders Benfica in the table ahead of the Eagles clash at Marítimo on Sunday night.

The hosts look set to push the championship race to the final day of the campaign in what has been a superb season. The Lions have been spurred on by the arrival of former Benfica coach Jorge Jesus this term and are once again a major force in Portuguese football under the 57-year-old. Jesus told fans start of the season, "I can promise you that, from now onwards, Sporting will be competing for all the major honours in Portugal."

And he was been true to his word with Sporting coming flying out of the blocks last year, beating arch-rivals Benfica three times and seeing off Porto to spend the vast majority of the campaign at the top of the table.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Benfica at the start of March, however, saw the Eagles leapfrog Sporting into first and now it's a case hoping that the two-time defending champions slip up in their remaining two games in order to pip them to the title.

Sporting scored a crucial 3-1 win over FC Porto last time out to stay in the hunt for Primeira Liga glory heading into the penultimate round of fixtures of the season.

A brace from Islam Slimani and a Bruno César effort was enough to secure maximum points as Sporting stayed within two of Benfica.

“It isn't easy to come here and come away with a result like this," Portugal international Adrien Silva told the club's official website after the game.

"We showed great character and quality. We controlled the crucial moments and we held out against a great side like FC Porto. The lads responded well tonight and they all deserve to be congratulated. We scored right before half-time and that always lifts you a bit more than if you score at other times. We have maximum confidence that we can win the title and that is how we will carry on until the end of the season."

Next up is a Vitoria side who have lost four on the bounce in the league and who are without a win in 13. That sequence of results means they still need a win to guarantee their top flight status next season but they are unlikely to earn that here with Sporting looking to set up a thrilling climax to the campaign with victory.
