Southampton v Manchester City Betting Tips Explained

Manchester City are hanging onto the final qualifying spot for next season’s Champions League, but they will not want the hassle of having to negotiate the qualifying stages once again and to avoid that they have to overhaul Liverpool and secure a top-three finish. Two points are currently separating the two teams and with the Reds not in action until Sunday, City know they can climb into the top three – at least for almost 24 hours – with a victory on Saturday evening.

City ended a four-match winless run in the Premier League with a 3-1 home win over relegation-threatened Hull City last time out, and manager Pep Guardiola will be hoping that is the start of a winning run of results because his team have not managed consecutive league wins since they embarked on a four-match winning run between February 1 and March 5. But can they leave Southampton with all three points in the bag?

Last week proved to be a very positive one for Saints as they bounced back from the defeat at Tottenham Hotspur and home draw with Bournemouth by recording back-to-back wins. Claude Puel’s side swept aside Crystal Palace 3-1 before grinding out a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, and those results have kept them in the top half of the Premier League table with just eight games left on their schedule.

That sequence of results will give them confidence going into this one, but  I am not confident about their chances despite City’s underwhelming for over the past few months. Southampton, after all, have a poor record when it comes to facing top-six sides in the league. Saints have collected just two points from a possible 21 when facing those clubs in the league this season, and although they did earn a draw at the Etihad Stadium it is hard to ignore their struggles against the big boys.

Manchester City can win this, although that questionable defence should ensure Saints give their fans something to cheer by finding the back of the net. And of course, if I am backing Manchester City to win a match in which both teams score I am predicting we will see at least three goals on Saturday evening. There have been three or more goals in each of City’s last three league games and in seven of Southampton’s last nine in the top tier, and if you look at previous meetings between the two clubs eight of the last 11 have seen at least three goals. I expect to see something similar here.
