Southampton shorten to 5/2 for relegation after eighth loss of the season

Ben Darvill 5 Dec 2018

Southampton shorten to 5/2 for relegation after eighth loss of the season.

Southampton dispensed of the services of Mark Hughes this week as the beleaguered Premier League side look to rejuvenate their ailing survival hopes. However, the side were well beaten by Tottenham in their game on Wednesday night as goals from Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min consigned the Saints to their eighth loss of the season.

Charlie Austin was able to net a consolation goal in the 93rd minute, but this meant little to the side as they lost again. Their latest loss means they sit in 18th in the league with nine points, one short of Huddersfield in 17th.

Their defeat to Tottenham was one many saw coming, and they would likely have had one eye on their huge clash with Cardiff this coming Saturday, in a big relegation six-pointer.

With their clash with the Welsh side fast approaching, they have seen their odds of avoiding relegation shorten to just 5/2 with William Hill after their latest defeat. Cardiff are a side that are still ahead of them in the betting at 4/7, with Burnley (4/11) and Huddersfield (4/7) the favourites to go down, while Fulham are Evens in the betting.

A win over Cardiff at the weekend would likely see Southampton’s odds of relegation drift, and it would be huge for the morale of both the team and the fans.

William Hill - Premier League Relegation betting odds:

Burnley - 4/11

Huddersfield - 4/7

Cardiff - 4/7

Fulham - Evens

Southampton - 5/2
