Sorry Sarri’s sack race odds slashed after Man City hit Chelsea for six

Maurizio Sarri is the new favourite to be this season’s next Premier League managerial casualty after seeing his Chelsea side slump to a pathetic 6-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders Manchester City on Sunday.

The Sarri era at Stamford Bridge looked set to be a successful one as Chelsea stormed out of the blocks, winning their first five Premier League games of the season, and a 12-match unbeaten run to start the season had many wondering if they could upstage City and Liverpool in the title race.

That unbeaten run finally came to an end with the 3-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in late November, and while that was not the start of an epic collapse, they did suffer disappointing defeats away to Wolves and at home to Leicester City that seemed to spark a change in atmosphere at the Bridge.

And if the club was on a downer coming into 2019, it has only taken several weeks for them to hit rock-bottom.

The recent 4-0 humiliation at Bournemouth left Sarri publicly questioning whether or not he could motivate his side, and although they did respond with a 5-0 thrashing of rock-bottom Huddersfield Town they were brought back down to Earth in embarrassing fashion on Sunday.

There is certainly no shame in losing at Manchester City, but they found themselves 4-0 down with just 25 minutes on the clock and offered little in reply as the league leaders added a couple more after the break to wrap up a 6-0 victory.

Sarri was quick to head back down the tunnel at the final whistle, snubbing opposite number Pep Guardiola, and it appears increasingly likely that his days as Chelsea manager could be over – after all, the Blues are not known for their patience when it comes to bosses.

Bookmaker Betway and its punters certainly feel that way, and in the wake of the 6-0 drubbing the bookie has slashed the odds on Sarri being the next Premier League manager to leave his post this season, making him the 2/1 favourite ahead of 9/4 Everton boss Marco Silva.

Claude Puel, a one-time favourite, is now out to 5/1 despite Leicester City’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Losing 6-0 in any scenario is enough to pile the pressure on a manager, let alone a Chelsea side that has been very hit and miss of late and has a history of knee-jerk dismissals,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com.

“Maurizio Sarri may have been partially forgiven for his side’s 4-0 loss to Bournemouth thanks to a 5-0 drubbing of Huddersfield, but we’re taking no chances after this embarrassment at the Etihad and make him just 2/1 to be the next Premier League sacking.

“Only Everton boss Marco Silva is rivalling Sarri in the betting following their fifth loss in six games to Watford, while the focus looks to have shifted away from Claude Puel for the time being with his odds of getting the chop pushed out to 5/1 from 6/4.”
