Can SPAL stop Juventus, will Napoli return to winning ways against Chievo, and can Atalanta take a step closer to European football next year? Read on for our three best bets for the games in Serie A this weekend.

SPAL vs Juventus (Saturday, 14:00 BST)

SPAL have been poor this season and they are not yet out of relegation trouble, with the side in desperate need of points. Currently sitting on 32 points from 31 games, their eight wins, eight draws and 15 defeats means they are only four points clear of Empoli in 18th with the trap door to Italy’s second-tier right behind them. While they had been on a fairly good run of late, they were beaten 2-1 by Cagliari in their last match as their three-game winning run was brought to an end. Now, with only seven games of the season to go, they desperately need to pick up points. Juventus on the other hand arrive looking to secure yet another Serie A crown with 20 points between themselves and second-place Napoli with only 21 points left to pick up. With the side still in the Champions League and looking to reign supreme in Europe, they will want to wrap the league up as soon as possible so that they can focus on Europe. However, the second-leg of their quarter-final against Ajax is scheduled for next week meaning that they may be tempted to rest players, which we think is why Juve can be backed to beat a side at Evens.

At home this season, SPAL have been fairly good, winning four, drawing six and losing five, with the club desperately searching for the points to get out of the trouble they have found themselves in. Juventus meanwhile have won 13 of their 15 games on the road, drawing once and losing once. It should be noted that Juve’s only loss this year came on the road against Genoa, although they have immediately hit back with three wins in a row in the league along with a victory away at Cagliari. With this in mind along with the fact that Juve may look to rest some of their stars, we think this one will be a tight game. However, we are backing Juve to win this one at rather good odds of Evens.

Chievo vs Napoli (Sunday, 17:00 BST)

Chievo have been awful this season as relegation for the side has been all but secured. A single win in 31 is a woeful return, while they have drawn 11 and lost 19, with the 11 points they have picked up seeing them languish a massive 19 points short of Bologna with only seven games to go. Their awful start to the season hinted at relegation this year, and their inability to pick up victories has almost secured this. Napoli meanwhile arrive in second in the league with 64 points from their 31 games, winning 19, drawing seven and losing five times. Honestly, they have enjoyed a very good season, but they have struggled to keep pace with Juventus at the top, with the league leaders just far too good for them. Their last game however did end in a 1-1 draw with Genoa as they failed to take advantage of the fact their opponents went down to 10-men before 30 minutes of the game had passed. Of course, even a win in this game would not have put off Juventus winning the title for long, but they will have been hugely disappointed nonetheless.

Chievo’s only win of the season did come at home, but they have drawn five times and lost nine along the way, with the outfit simply not good enough. Indeed, the side have not won since December 29th, losing nine and drawing three games since then. Napoli on the other hand have won eight games on the road along with three draws and four losses, and they will look to pick up three points against a Chievo side that have been awful this season. However, backing Napoli offers little value, so we are backing them to win to nil in this one. We are well-aware that the away side have not kept a clean sheet on the road in their last three matches, but we are confident they will enjoy a shutout against a Chievo side that have been beaten to nil in their last three games in a row, and in seven of their last nine matches.

Atalanta vs Empoli (Monday, 19:30 BST)

Atalanta continue to impress this season, with the side in fantastic form. 15 wins in 31 games along with seven draws and nine defeats has seen the side pick up 52 points in a fantastic campaign. Indeed, they are currently the joint top scorers in the competitions with 64 goals, level with Juventus as they continue to show that they are a side that have really hit their stride attacking-wise. Impressively, their last game in the league ended in a 0-0 draw with Inter Milan at the San Siro which displayed that they are able to more than hold their own agains the best sides in the league. Empoli meanwhile sit in the relegation zone after 31 games, with the side really struggling. Seven wins, seven draws and 17 defeats in 31 have come along with 40 goals scored and 59 conceded as they continue to show that they are weak both in attack and defence. Indeed, their last game ended in a 3-2 loss to Udinese as they failed to make the most out of the fact their hosts went down to 10-men for almost 30 minutes of the second-half. With Empoli in desperate need of a win, they will go all out in this one, but we do not think they will have their own way in the match.

Atalanta have managed to win seven of their 15 home games this season, drawing four and losing four times, while they have also been good on the road, winning eight, drawing three and losing five as they continue to prove that they are very good wherever they play. Empoli on the other hand are yet to win on the road, drawing four and losing 11 times, with their last five away games ending in defeat. Atalanta are the team to back here, but they will obviously offer very little value at home against a team in real trouble. To add value to this bet, we are backing high scoring Atalanta to be involved in a game with goals. In this one, we are predicting over 2.5 goals, with Atalanta seeing this in four of their last six games, while Empoli have seen the same in seven of their last eight matches.
