Scotland v Canada Betting Tips Explained

Scotland appeared to be on the up when Gordon Strachan took the reins four years ago. After a slow start they began to string together positive results and good performances, and they put themselves in a great position to qualify for Euro 2016 when beat the Republic of Ireland in a crucial match-up. However, once again a slip-up in Georgia proved to be their undoing and they appear to be suffering some sort of hangover after being forced to sit out another major international tournament.

Strachan’s side have won just one of their last six matches – thrashing Malta 5-1 – and they are already up against it in World Cup qualifying having taken only four points from their first four games. The 1-1 home draw with Lithuania was, quite frankly, pathetic and they ended 2016 with back-to-back 3-0 defeats in Slovakia and England, so they desperately need to beat Slovenia on Sunday night.

“We must win that game,” Strachan told reporters. “There is no getting away from that fact but we are looking forward to that challenge and I think the fans will be looking forward to that challenge, going to a game that you must win. So together we can make it a right good night. The fans have always given us support but we really need it that night. The guys will be prepared, the fans will be prepared and we are looking to put in a right good performance.”

But before that match they have an opportunity to give themselves a boost because Canada are providing the opposition in an international friendly at Easter Road. The question is can the Scots stop the rot?

As bad as they were in 2016, and as poor as that draw with Lithuania was, Scotland do boast a solid home record when they face teams of equal or lesser ability and the Canadians fall into that bracket. While the visitors are in their best form for two years, they have now lost each of their last five away games, scoring just one goal, and their winless run on their travels stands at nine. This is not going to be a thrilling game, but Scotland should win by a couple of goals to give themselves a much-needed lift.

And if you are looking to back a goalscorer, I suggest putting your money on Jordan Rhodes to find the back of the net during Wednesday’s international friendly. Rhodes was handed his chance in the senior team back in 2012 after a fantastic run of goals for both Huddersfield Town and the Scotland U21s, and he made an immediate impact with three goals in his first four games.

However, he was unable to land a regular starting spot for the senior team and drifted out of the international picture in 2015. Rhodes is back in the fold for this one and Strachan has suggested he will get a chance to impress, and if he does I like his chances of grabbing a goal.
