They'll take plenty of confidence from positive campaigns last year, though, as Los Millonarios ended a 19-year wait for their third Libertadores Cup crown and Boca landed their 31st league title.

River Plate scored a 3-0 aggregate win over Mexican club Tigres in the continental showpiece last August to complete a remarkable turn around in their fortunes in the space of four years after the Buenos Aires based club were relegated for the first time in over a century.

Their third triumph in the competition followed successes in 1986 and 1996 and meant the club were holders of both of South America's top club competitions for a short time having won the Copa Sudamericana the previous December.

Boca, meanwhile, won the Argentine first division championship with a match to spare to move within five of River Plate's record of 36 in October.

The Blue and Gold were in no small way inspired by Carlos Tevez following the Argentina striker's return to the club from Europe in mid-year as they succeeded Racing Club as champions.

The former Juventus striker has already courted controversy this season, though, breaking Newell's Old Boys goalkeeper Ezequiel Unsain's jaw with his knee in a collision in their 4-1 victory over Old Boys last month.

Tevez scored his second goal of the campaign in that contest but Boca have failed to scored since, being held to two goalless stalemates in the Copa Libertadores away to Deportivo Cali and at home to Racing Club, and also going down 1-0 to Racing in the league.

By contrast, River Plate have scored eight in their last three outings and have won two on the bounce beating Trujillanos 4-0 away in the Copa Libertadores and downing Independiente 1-0 at home in the league.

Recent meetings between these two have been close affairs and the nod goes to the hosts to edge this one.
