Los Millonarios ended a 19-year wait for their third Libertadores Cup crown last month with a 3-0 aggregate win over Mexican club Tigres in the continental showpiece.

That result was all the more remarkable given that it came just four years after the Buenos Aires club were relegated for the first time in over a century and means that they now hold both of South America's top club competitions, having won the Copa Sudamericana in December.

Their third triumph in the competition follows triumphs in 1986 and 1996 and has earned the club a place at Fifa's Club World Cup this December.

They followed that triumph up with a 3-0 win over Gamba Osaka in the Suruga Bank Championship on August 11, which is played between the winners of last year's Copa Sudamericana and the Japanese League Cup.

To rub salt in the wound, River Plate eliminated Boca Juniors from South America's premier club competition at the last 16 stage.

Two defeats and a draw in their last four Primera Division outings, though, have seen them lose ground on the top two in the league with leaders San Lorenzo boasting a nine point advantage and Boca sitting eight points above their bitter rivals in second.
A 4-1 win over Nueva Chicago flattered River last weekend but was a morale booster nonetheless, as it came a week ahead of the visit of their most hated enemy.

Boca Juniors, meanwhile, come into the clash having let their grip on top spot in the Argentine top flight slip after falling victim to a late Mauro Matos strike that gave San Lorenzo all three points last weekend and saw them move into pole position.

The Blue and Gold had dominated the game but failed to break down San Lorenzo's disciplined defensive unit and will be determined to bounce back to winning ways here lest the risk losing further ground in the title race.

River Plate are boosted by the return of Argentina's Matias Kranevitter, Colombia's Eder Alvarez Balanta and Uruguayans Carlos Sanchez and Camilo Mayada from international duty for the clash, although Emanuel Mammana (left calf) and Leonel Vangioni (right calf) miss out due to injury.

Boca's Jonathan Calleri is suspended and Nicolas Colazo an injury doubt due to a hamstring problem.

There have been 239 competitive Superclasicos and Boca have the edge winning 85 compared to River's 78, with 76 ending draws.
