Can Rangers avenge their humiliating Europa League exit from two years ago when they take on Progres Niederkorn in the second round of qualifying? Read on for all of our free betting tips and predictions.

Rangers v Progres Niederkorn

Two years ago Rangers made their eagerly-awaited return to European football with a Europa League first-round qualifier against Progres Niederkorn. With the fixture coming so early in the season Pedro Caixinha’s side were understandably not up to full speed heading into the two-legged tie, but they were still expected to cruise past the part-timers from Luxembourg. That did not happen. Instead they scraped a 1-0 win at Ibrox before slumping to a pathetic 2-0 defeat in the return leg, and although Caixinha did stick around for a few more months this embarrassing European exit was the beginning of the end for the Portuguese flop.

Steven Gerrard was eventually installed as Rangers manager in a blockbuster appointment that shook up Scottish football, and much has changed since that fateful night in Luxembourg. The Gers exorcised a few demons as they made it through to the group stage last time out and by the end of their campaign there was a sense of disappointment that they had blown an excellent opportunity to make it through to the knockout stage. Gerrard will be looking to his side to go one better this time around, but before they can even think of the group and knockout stages they have the small matter of negotiating a few rounds of qualifying.

They got through the first round with ease as they swept aside minnows St Joseph’s from Gibraltar. A strong second-half showing in difficult conditions led them to a 4-0 victory in the first leg under the rock, and despite Gerrard fielding what some would considered a ‘weakened’ team for the return leg, Rangers went two better by slamming six past their opponents to complete a 10-0 aggregate win. With their side in cruise control supporters were playing close attention to the fixture that would determine their next opponents and out of the two clubs there was only one the wanted - Progres Niederkorn. They got their wish as the side from Luxembourg battled past Cork City.

So can Rangers get their revenge for their 2017 humiliation? Only James Tavernier, Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos remain from that horror-show, but even the men who have arrived at Ibrox since then will know that this fixture certainly has some meaning for the fans. They do not want a slender win, they want Progres Niederkorn putting firmly in their place and when you consider the Gers fine form in recent weeks you have to believe the players will deliver.

St Joseph’s, Oxford United and Marseille have all been swept aside as a ruthless-looking Rangers side rattled in the goals and shut their opponents out at the other end, and despite the underwhelming friendly draw against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend I expect we will see the Glasgow giants give themselves a commanding lead to take to Luxembourg. It may never erase the club’s embarrassment of bowing out to the minnows two years ago, but a convincing win will go some way to exorcising those demons and the images of Caixinha standing in a bush facing angry supporters!
