Rangers v FC Midtjylland

Steven Gerrard wanted to see a more ruthless Rangers after an underwhelming Europa League win over Progres Niederkorn and a hard-fought opening-day victory against Kilmarnock, and he got his wish last week as the Glasgow giants went on a scoring spree that saw them score 10 times in just two games. First they put four past FC Midtjylland to take command of their latest European qualifier, and they topped that this past weekend has they hit Hibernian for six in their first home game of the Scottish Premiership season.

“That's how I want us to look,” Gerrard said after the rout of Hibs. “To look like a threat all of the time, getting people in one-vs-one positions and strikers being clinical. Their defence has had a really tough 90 minutes and that's the way it's got to look [for us]. I'm actually disappointed we didn't score more. Every time we went forward we looked dangerous. I have respect for Hibs and [manager] Paul Heckingbottom. They are a good team, but they met Rangers on a bad day [for them].”

The way they clinically dispatched of Hibernian was impressive, and the perfect response to Celtic’s latest high-scoring win, but ahead of this European fixture the result that has to be highlighted most is that 4-2 victory in Denmark a week ago – a result that saw Rangers put one foot in the play-off round of Europa League qualifying. This tie was considered their first real test of the season so far and aside from a 10-minute spell in the second half where they switched off and let Midtjylland back into the game, it was a test that Rangers passed with flying colours to take control.

A 4-2 victory on foreign soil means not only do they have a healthy two-goal cushion to defend in this return meeting at Ibrox, it also means that Midtjylland have a mountain to climb because the Scottish side’s position is strengthened even further by those four away goals. For Midtjylland to advance they need to win this match by three or more goals, and net at least three times in the process, and I just do not see that happening. If they go on the offensive here, which they simply have to do, they are going to leave plenty of holes at the back that Rangers can exploit and turn into goals, especially if they show the same ruthless side that we witness against Hibernian.

Those two performances leave me in no doubt that Rangers will come out on top in this return meeting, but Midtjylland could give the visiting fans something to cheer. The Gers were looking strong at the back in pre-season, but they have now conceded in each of their last three competitive fixtures and those goals have come from defenders switching off momentarily. Those lapses in concentration will be worrying, and disappointing, Gerrard and another one here could result in Allan McGregor or Wes Foderingham picking the ball out of the net. However, in the scoring form that Rangers are in I expect the Midtjylland goalkeeper to be doing it more times than his counterpart.
