Southampton v Liverpool (Saturday 15:00 BST)

Liverpool picked up exactly where they left off as they made a flying start to their assault on the Premier League title. While they may have underwhelmed in pre-season, for a good reason I believe, he Reds needed less than 45 minutes to put newly-promoted Norwich City to the sword just over a week ago. Jurgen Klopp’s side rattled in four first-half goals as they cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Canaries, and while there will clearly be much tougher tests to come, the manager could not have asked for any more from his European champions. Manchester City’s response was an emphatic though – a 5-0 demolition of West Ham United less than 24 hours later – and once again these two clubs are set to slug it out for the Premier League title. The slightest slip-up could prove to be costly in what is set to be a nip-and-tuck battle, so even at this early stage of the season you have to believe matches like this, a trip to Southampton, must be considered must-win outings for the Merseyside giants. And could there honestly be a better time for them to visit Saints?

Liverpool are enjoying a four-match win streak in meetings with the South Coast club and the home side go into this match on the back of a dreadful defeat on opening weekend. Southampton were uninspiring but hardly dreadful for the first 60 minutes at Burnley, but once the Clarets broke the deadlock on 63 minutes the floodgates opened and by the time Saints had plugged the leak, they had conceded three times in the space of 12 minutes. That sudden collapse will have boss Ralph Hasenhuttl worried about his defence and perhaps he will be pretty terrified because his team are now coming up against a free-scoring Liverpool side loaded with attacking talent. Once Liverpool break the deadlock there is a danger that this too could turn into a bit of a rout, so having seen the Reds win the last four meetings with Southampton by two goals or more, I fancy the outcome to be similar here. However, I am using bet365’s Bet Builder to combine that selection with backing Mohamed Salah to score first. The Egyptian needed only 19 minutes to open his account for the season and his record against Southampton, since signing for Liverpool, is nothing short of lethal – four matches, at least one goal per game and five goals in total. So with that in mind there is bags of appeal in backing Salah to score first as Liverpool beat Saints by two or more goals.

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur (Saturday 17:30 BST)

The second potential top six Manchester vs London game in the space of a week takes place on Sunday as Manchester City welcome Tottenham to the Etihad for what should be a massive occasion. City come into this one after hammering West Ham in a real show of strength for the new season as they blew their London opponents away. Spurs meanwhile were forced to wait until the 86th minute to take the lead against Aston Villa as a Harry Kane double eventually won the game for the home team. While the most important thing for Kane’s side was the three points, the manner in which they struggled to break down Villa at home was something that will worry the side, with City not a team they will want to be trailing at any point in the game as the reigning champions will surely not look back once going in front.

One man we feel will surely have some part to play in the game is last week’s hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling, who hit the ground running in the league this season by immediately climbing to the top of the scoring charts, ahead of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane, who both have two goals. Sterling’s three goals came in the 51st, 75th and 91st minutes as he tore West Ham apart, and such is Spurs’ awful record against City (winning just one of their last seven and losing five), we think that the home side will enjoy their day, with Sterling likely to get on the scoresheet and, in our opinion, open the scoring against Spurs, although a slightly safer bet would be Sterling anytime and a City win, although this obviously does not bring with it the same potential reward. Sterling has netted two goals in his last two games against Spurs and with 17 goals last year and three already in this campaign we think the forward will likely continue his impressive scoring form while we predict a tough day for Spurs at the Etihad, with the side not winning any of their last four games at the stadium.
