Why We Are Backing Michael Owen’s Weekend Treble

  • Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal – Arsenal have been appalling on their travels this season, winning only three times away from home in the Premier League, and their most recent outings on the road have seen them lose at Bournemouth and Swansea City. In fact, they have won just once on their travels since a 1-0 win at Burnley in late November. Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, have lost only two competitive matches at Wembley this season and their sole home defeat in the Premier League came back in late August. The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid have been swept aside here, and I expect Arsenal will be added to that list here.

  • Southampton v Liverpool – Just two points are currently separating Southampton from the relegation zone and they go into this ‘Super Sunday’ showdown on the back of a huge morale-boosting win at West Bromwich Albion last time out – a result that ended a 12-game sequence without a victory. Saints did register some creditable draws during that winless run – holding Arsenal Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – so they have certainly showed they will be no pushover, but Liverpool have, aside from the shock loss to Swansea City, been performing pretty well on their travels in the league this season so I expect them to return to winning ways here.

  • Newcastle United v Manchester United – Newcastle United have proved to be a tough nut to crack at St James’ Park this season – they have trailed at half-time in only three of their 13 home games and they have already held Liverpool to a draw while suffering slender defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. This is a team that does not tend to get blown away at home, but the problem for them is Manchester United have become masters of grinding out victories under Mourinho. Therefore I am backing the visitors to win a low-scoring affair here.
