Portugal v Mexico Betting Tips Explained

Well, Portugal and Mexico have advanced to the final day of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, although not for the reasons they were hoping.

Third place is the consolation prize on offer to the beaten semi-finalists, who will want to finish the tournament with a bang in Moscow.

Portugal suffered penalty-shootout heartbreak against Chile in the semis, as Claudio Bravo performed heroics by saving three spot-kicks from Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani.

Although, despite the disappointment, Fernando Santos’ men are now unbeaten in 13 matches over 90 minutes at major tournaments and, although they will be without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo, that will stand them in good stead to secure third place.

Meanwhile, Mexico were simply outclassed in the semi-finals by an inspired Germany, who ran out comfortable 4-1 winners on Thursday.

Two goals from Leon Goretzka inside the opening eight minutes proved to be decisive, as El Tri were always playing catch-up from that moment onwards.

The only consolation that Juan Carlos Osorio’s men will take from the rout is the fact that it was only their second defeat in 17 matches.

It may be the match that neither team wanted to be involved in, but you would have to back Portugal to take third place with a narrow victory on Sunday.

Portugal v Mexico Stats

  • Portugal have never lost in their three previous meetings with Mexico – winning two and drawing one
  • Despite the semi-final defeat to Chile on penalties, the Portuguese are unbeaten in normal time in their last 13 matches at major tournaments
  • Portugal have gone six matches without tasting defeat – keeping clean sheets in five of them
  • The semi-final defeat to Germany was only the second in 17 matches for Mexico
