Match Preview

A goalless draw in the first leg in Wellington leaves the second leg of the Inter-Continental PlayOff a straight shoot-out over 90 minutes at Estadio Nacional in Lima on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

The All Whites survived early pressure in front a near-capacity crowd at Westpac Stadium and had a late chance to win the first leg, only for Ryan Thomas' effort to shave the outside of the post with four minutes remaining.

It was a game in which New Zealand would have come away arguably the happier having not conceded an away goal despite Peru, the 10th best team in the world on official rankings, going close through Jefferson Farfan, Yordy Reina and Aldo Corzo.

But goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic kept the Peruvians at bay to leave it all to play for when the sides meet in the decisive second leg in Lima.

With 112 places between the two sides in the FIFA rankings, Peru will start the second leg as clear favourites to secure a place in the World Cup finals for the first time since 1982.

Peru lost just two of nine qualifiers at home - one of which was to Brazil, and defeat Uruguay and held both Argentina and Colombia to draws. Those four teams were the automatic qualifiers from the South American qualifying.

It underlines the task awaiting Anthony Hudson's All Whites and they will need another resolute defensive performance if they are to qualify for the World Cup for only the third time. An away goal will be the objective and it could prove crucial.

Team News

Peru are still without suspended striker and captain Paulo Guererro, who scored five times in qualifying, following a failed doping test.

New Zealand are likely to start Chris Wood in attack after he was forced to be a late substitute in the first leg because of a tight hamstring. Tommy Smith picked up a knock in the first leg but is expected to be fit.
