Former Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is the early favourite to become the next Southampton manager following the decision to sack Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday night.

Despite only being appointed manager last summer, Pellegrino had been on shaky ground all season long with Saints’ poor form putting them in a fight for survival at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

A run of just one win in their last 17 games has left them hovering dangerously above the relegation zone, one point from safety, and Saturday’s ugly 3-0 defeat up at Newcastle United proved to be the final straw for the board, with Pellegrino’s axing being announced late on Monday night.

“The club can confirm it has parted company with Mauricio Pellegrino,” read a statement on the Southampton website. “Assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future. The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway.”

The decision to axe Pellegrino has left Southampton searching for a manager for the second time in less than a year, and the early favourite with bookmaker William Hill is former Stoke City boss Mark Hughes.

Hughes was axed by the Potters following a shock FA Cup defeat to Coventry City earlier this year, but the Welshman is the 11/8 favourite for the role after television and radio pundit Robbie Savage backed him for the job and pointed out that the former striker has never been relegated during his managerial career in the top flight.

Ex-Watford boss Marco Silva is also a leading contender at 2/1, having been linked with several posts over the past few months, while Frank de Boer is considered a 10/1 shot having spurned the chance to take the Southampton job in the summer when he opted for Crystal Palace – where he lasted only a handful of months.

Former West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic is 12/1 to make his return to management at St Mary’s, with Graham Potter considered a 20/1 outsider having seen his reputation grow considerably during his successful stint with Swedish side Ostersunds, who recently beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Latest William Hill Odds:

Next permanent Southampton manager: 11/8 Mark Hughes, 2/1 Marco Silva; 10/1 Frank de Boer; 12/1 Slaven Bilic, 20/1 Graham Potter, 20/1 Manuel Pellegrini, 20/1 Paulo Fonseca, 20/1 Slavisa Jokanovic.
