Next Hearts manager betting odds: Paul Hartley 4/1 favourite for Jambos job

Hearts will reportedly begin talks with potential new managers this week, according to reports, and the bookmakers believe former Dundee boss Paul Hartley is the front-runner to land the Tynecastle job.

Hearts have been on the hunt for a new manager since making the decision to axe Ian Cathro just days before their Scottish Premiership opener against Celtic.

Cathro had been a surprise appointment as Hearts head coach last December, following the departure of Robbie Neilson, but he was unable to build on the work done by his predecessor as the Edinburgh club finished outside of the top three in the Scottish Premiership, winning only six of their 26 matches under him.

The 31-year-old came into the new season under pressure and after some disappointing results in the group stage of the League Cup – namely a defeat to Peterhead and penalty shoot-out loss to Dunfermline – he was given his marching orders.

“The board wishes it to be known that this was a very difficult decision, reluctantly made, as every member of the board recognises that Ian is an extremely talented young coach with a very bright future ahead of him,” read a statement on the club’s official website. “We thank Ian for all of his efforts and wish him well in the future.”

Steven Pressley was installed as the early favourite for the job, but the former defender has drifted over the past week and while he is still believed to be a leading contender for the post, he is now out at 6/1 with BetVictor where he is joined by the club’s director of football, Craig Levein.

Replacing Pressley as the favourite for the job is former Jambos midfielder Paul Hartley, who has been out of work since leaving Dundee in the late stages of the 2016/17 season.

The 40-year-old won the Scottish Cup with Hearts during his time there as a player, and he has publicly admitted his interest in returning to Tynecastle as manager, insisting he has no concerns about working under a director of football.

“I loved my time there [as a player],” Hartley told BBC Scotland. “They’ve got a brilliant fanbase, they’ve got brilliant people that work at the club, they’re putting a new stand in. If Hearts were willing to speak to me then of course I would because of the affinity I have with the club.

“For me whoever gets that job you can always work with people above you, or a director of football, or whatever you want to call it. I don’t see that being a problem.”
