Bookies expect Chelsea to turn to ‘familiar’ face – but it won’t be Benitez or Mourinho!

Chelsea’s next permanent manager will be a ‘familiar face’, according to bookmaker Betway.

With Maurizio Sarri expected to depart for Juventus this summer, the Blues are once again on the hunt for a new boss and in recent days there have been reports about a shock return to the club for either Rafael Benitez or Jose Mourinho.

The bookies are not buying the Mourinho reports, with the former Manchester United manager out at 8/1 for a third stint at Stamford Bridge, but Betway is not ruling out the possibility of Benitez agreeing to a second spell on the King’s Road.

Benitez’s interim appointment a few years back did not go down too well with supporters, due to comments he made during his time with Liverpool, but he did lead the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League and success in the Europa League, and he is now just 9/2 to return amid reports that a deal is imminent.

However, these reports have received a hostile response from Chelsea supporters and it would appear as though that has not gone unnoticed in the betting.

In fact, the fans’ negativity towards the possible appointment of Benitez may have resulted in more backing for former midfielder Frank Lampard, who’s first season in charge of Derby County ended in disappointment as they lost to Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final.

The club legend has been linked with a return to Chelsea as manager for several months now, and the odds on him being appointed as the next permanent boss have been slashed all the way into 1/3, making him the odds-on favourite to succeed Sarri.

“A number of football clubs will be winding down for the summer holidays,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com. “But for Chelsea it’s business as usual as they look to clean up their managerial situation.

“Reports suggest Maurizio Sarri is edging closer to the exit at Stamford Bridge and the latest betting is firmly indicating that Frank Lampard, now just 1/3, is the man to fill the void.

“Massimiliano Allegri was rivalling Lampard in the betting at 5/2 last week, but his odds have more than doubled over the last 24 hours, while Rafael Benitez could be the surprise runner in the race for the job and has received notable backing at 9/2 this morning.”
