Middlesbrough v Oxford United Betting Tips Explained

Oxford United sprang one of the biggest surprises of the fourth round as they dumped out Championship leaders Newcastle United in emphatic fashion, romping to a 3-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium. They now face another North-East outfit in Middlesbrough and United will head to the Riverside in decent form having won eight of their last 10 games in all competitions.

That is form that Middlesbrough wish they could boast. As expected, Aitor Karanka’s side are battling against relegation in their first season back in the Premier League and they have now gone eight games without a win in the top-flight. The FA Cup has brought some joy with home wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Accrington Stanley getting them this far, and they will have been relived to get Oxford at the Riverside in the fifth round – but can they make home advantage count.

Middlesbrough may be struggling for wins right now, but their home form is not too bad with just one defeat coming in their last seven competitive outings at the Riverside. Karanka’s men have been particularly good at keeping clean sheets on their home turf, shutting out five of the last seven visitors to their stadium, and I expect them to do that again here. That defence is the reason Boro are not in the Premier League’s bottom three right now and it has played a key role in them getting this far in the cup. It should play another decisive role as the Premier League side progress on Saturday.

Karanka could see Saturday’s clash with Oxford as an opportunity to get his strikers back on the goal trail, so that is why I am backing Alvaro Negredo to score anytime. The Spanish striker did not start against Accrington in the last round, but he was in the XI for the meeting with Sheffield Wednesday in round three and he could be in the side once again here. If Negredo does start this fifth-round tie then he represents a decent bet to get on the scoresheet.
