Middlesbrough v Manchester United Betting Tips Explained

Manchester United put their FA Cup exit behind them to advance in the Europa League in midweek, and they will now look to return to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend. The Red Devils are on an impressive 17-match unbeaten run in the league at this time, but they have dropped six points in their last five games thanks to some disappointing draws and they will be desperate to get back to winning ways after the stalemate with Bournemouth last time out.

So the timing of a trip to Middlesbrough could be perfect for Jose Mourinho’s side. Middlesbrough are second-from-bottom in the Premier League following back-to-back defeats at Crystal Palace and Stoke City, which extended their winless run in the league to 10 games, and last weekend’s loss against the Potters proved to be the final straw for the club’s board as they sacked ‘tired’ manager Aitor Karanka – the man who masterminded Boro’s return to the top flight.

“We agreed that a different approach is required,” chairman Steve Gibson told the Times newspaper. “Aitor is tired, he has worked so hard for our football club over the last three and half years and the tension surrounding the end of last season would have taken its toll on anyone. Then we had a very busy summer – he hasn't really had a break since the minute he walked through the door. What we concluded - he and I - was that he perhaps wasn't the guy at this point in time to deliver that change. I know people are cynical when you say that a decision was mutual, but he wasn't sacked. He sacrificed himself. He's in a good frame of mind. I think he's relieved.”

Steve Agnew has been placed in charge on a temporary basis but I am not expecting a repeat of what has happened at Leicester City. Boro have now gone 10 games without a victory in the Premier League and they are the lowest scoring side in the top flight. That does not bode well for a meeting with one of the tightest rearguards in the top flight so I have to back Manchester United to claim all three points and record a clean sheet.

Under 2.5 Total Goals also looks like a good bet for Sunday’s showdown at the Riverside. Middlesbrough have scored only 19 goals in the Premier League this season and they have managed only 11 in their 13 home outings. That is a truly pathetic record and I do not see their shortcomings in front of goal improving any time soon. Manchester United have shown themselves to be very adept at grinding out low-scoring wins and that could be the case again here.
