Manchester United v West Ham United Betting Tips Explained

Manchester United go into their opening Premier League match having failed to get their hands on the first piece of silverware they could have claimed this season, losing 2-1 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia.

Casemiro and Isco gave Real a two-goal cushion before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back after the hour mark, but Marcus Rashford wasted a great chance to snatch and in truth it would have been an undeserved equaliser. Real could have add much more gloss to the scoreline had it not been for the efforts of David de Gea, but United boss Jose Mourinho insisted afterwards that there were plenty of reasons for his side to be optimistic ahead of their Premier League opener.

“I think we did well,” he said afterwards. “We lost 2-1 which, I think, shows the result was really short, and one of the goals was offside so with a good VAR [video assistant referee] it would be 1-1 and extra time. We were playing against a team of fantastic players and we discussed the result until almost the end, not the end but almost the end… we gave them a fight, we gave them a good fight and my boys only have reasons to leave - okay, disappointed because to lose is disappointing - but to leave optimistic and proud. Let’s go for it on Sunday.”

On Sunday they are taking on a West Ham United side that has undergone some impressive changes as they the London club tries to bounce back from an underwhelming 2016/17 campaign that saw them finish in the bottom half of the table, 24 points off the top six.

Manager Slaven Bilic has signed England goalkeeper Joe Hart on loan while completing permanent swoops for Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and, of course, former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez. West Ham’s pre-season results may not have been great, but you have to like their chances of finishing in the top half of the table following those captures. However, I am not expecting them to make a successful start to the season.

The Hammers have had a decent record at Old Trafford in recent years, losing just one of their last four visits, but their hosts have also recruited well in the summer and that can result in some improved home form for Mourinho’s men this time around. The visitors can grab a goal though – they have, after all, netted in seven of their last nine meetings with the Manchester club and you would not bet against summer signing Hernandez netting against his former employers.

And speaking of new recruits, I am backing Lukaku to get on the scoresheet after successfully backing him to score in the UEFA Super Cup at odds of 9/5. The Belgian has already scored a handful of goals in his new colours, following up three pre-season strikes with that Super Cup goal against Real, and I see no reason why Lukaku cannot grab his first Premier League goal for Manchester United on Sunday.
