Manchester United v Stoke City Betting Tips Explained

Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League title were very slim heading into the busy festive period – they are almost non-existent following a run of three straight draws between December 23 and December 30.

A 2-2 draw at Leicester City was followed up by disappointing home stalemates against Burnley and Southampton, but the Red Devils did get back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Everton on New Year’s Day and they will be eager to make it back-to-back victories, and return to winning ways at Old Trafford, when they entertain Stoke City on Monday night.

Stoke, of course, will arrive at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ in miserable form and without a manager following an embarrassing FA Cup defeat last weekend. The Potters wielded the axe on Mark Hughes in the wake of a 2-1 defeat at League Two side Coventry City and despite Slaven Bilic and Martin O'Neill being short odds to be named the Welshman’s replacement on a permanent basis (at the time of writing), it appears as though they will go into this match under the stewardship of caretaker boss Eddie Niedzwiecki.

So can Niedzwiecki really mastermind a positive result for Stoke at Old Trafford? My answer is no. United may have stumbled in their last two home outings, but on the whole they have been strong at home this season and they have only conceded a handful of goals in front of the home fans.

Stoke, meanwhile, boast the worst away record in the Premier League. While their win-draw-loss record is the same as West Bromwich Albion’s (one win, three draws and seven defeats) their -17 goal difference puts them bottom of the away form table so it is hard to see how they will halt their losing ways at Old Trafford.

United should claim all three points on Monday night and a clean sheet could be the icing on the cake. Only one team have conceded less goals at home in the Premier League this season and the Red Devils have kept clean sheets in eight of their 11 league outings in the top flight, so Manchester United to win to nil is a very tempting bet.

My second recommendation is backing Jesse Lingard to continue his purple patch in front of goal. The young winger has now scored four goals in his last four appearances for Manchester United and he has already eclipsed his previous best for goals scored in a Premier League campaign with half of the season still remaining. Lingard should cause all sorts of problems for struggling Stoke and it would not shock me to see him cap off his performance with another goal.
