Manchester United v Manchester City Betting Tips Explained

It may only be December, but Sunday’s huge showdown between Manchester United and Manchester City could be a defining moment in the race to win the Premier League title. If United take the honours they will become the first domestic club to beat City this season and close the gap between the two clubs to five points, but if Pep Guardiola’s men leave Old Trafford with the spoils they will open up a huge 11-point lead at the summit. So how will this go down?

United have suffered a couple of slip-ups this season, but for the first time in quite some time they appear to have a squad that can challenge for a title. Last weekend’s 3-1 win at Arsenal took their winning run in the Premier League to four games and the performance of goalkeeper David De Gea in that match was simply outstanding. The Spaniard once again showcased why he may well be the best goalkeeper on the planet, and the Red Devils are going to need him to be at his very best against this all-star City attacking line-up.

Manchester City have been almost flawless this season. They suffered their first competitive defeat in midweek as they lost to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, but very little should be read into that 2-1 reverse. The Premier League leaders had already secured a last-16 spot prior to that match so Guardiola had the luxury of resting a host of his star names with one eye on the derby. When City have been at full strength they have been pretty much unstoppable this season. They have taken 43 points from a possible 45 in the Premier League and their away record makes for perfect reading – they have won all seven of their top-flight matches away from the Etihad Stadium.

But on the flip side, Manchester United have been fantastic at Old Trafford. They have won every single competitive fixture they have played at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ so far this season, and in the Premier League they have out-scored the opposition 20-1 – a remarkable record. That means something has to give here – but will it be United’s 100% home record or City’s 100% away record? Or will both clubs see their perfect records come to an end with a stalemate?

This really is a tough match to call, but I have to go with Manchester City to silence Old Trafford and leave with the spoils. They have been simply sensational this season and it could be argued that Guardiola has at his disposal the best group of attacking players on the planet – Kevin De Bruyne has been in dazzling form while the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have been banging in the goals.

City have also shown their ability to grind out wins over teams that adopt a negative approach – something I expect to see from United here. Forget the Arsenal game a week ago, Mourinho is more likely to ‘park the bus’ for this one because he knows a defeat could all but end his side’s chances of lifting the title this season. United are going to look to catch the visitors out on the break and while they may be successful in doing that to grab a goal, I do not see it being enough for them to take anything from this match. Therefore backing City to win & both teams to score is an appealing bet, as is backing Over 2.5 Total Goals.
