Manchester City v Liverpool Betting Tips Explained

This week has been a disappointing one for Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola. For the first time in his managerial career, Guardiola has exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage after his side squandered a two-goal in the second leg of their tie with Monaco. City ran out 5-3 winners when the two teams went head-to-head in the first leg, but those three away goals they conceded turned out to be decisive factors as a 3-1 second leg win for Monaco saw the French league leaders advance on away goals. Afterwards, Guardiola took responsibility for his side’s exit from Europe.

“I tried to convince [the players] that we had to come here, try to attack and score,” Guardiola told reporters. “I did [convince them] in the second half but it was too late. All managers make mistakes but I don't think it was down to a tactical mistake. It's simple. The difference was between the first and the second half. In the second half we tried to win the game, we tried to play. I did it all my career in that way. But the problem was the first half. We weren't there.”

Guardiola must now try to lift his players for an important match against Liverpool on Sunday. The Reds are just one place and one point behind City in the race for a top-three finish that would secure a berth in the group stage of next season’s Champions League, so the Manchester club will be eager to at least maintain that gap on Sunday. They are in decent form domestically having now gone six games unbeaten in the Premier League, winning five of them, but Liverpool have picked up recently.

The Reds endured a horrific start to 2017 that pretty much ended their title challenge, but they appear to be back on track thanks to back-to-back wins over Arsenal and Burnley and they will be aiming to leapfrog City in the table this weekend. Liverpool have an excellent recent record against Manchester City having beaten them in five of the last seven encounters, so it would not be a surprise to see them leave the Etihad Stadium with all three points or at least a share of the spoils.

This, for me, is a match that really could really go anyway – a win for City, a win for Liverpool or a draw. Therefore I suggest ignoring the match betting market for Sunday’s clash and backing goals instead – that is something you can always expect when these two teams go head to head. Their December meeting did produce just one, but nine of the last 11 matches between Manchester City and Liverpool have seen both teams score while 10 of the last 13 have seen three goals or more. Three of the last four meetings at the Etihad Stadium have produced four goals or more and with a wealth of attacking talent in both sides, there is a good chance that we could see at least four on Sunday too.
