Manchester City 8/13 for back-to-back Premier League titles

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions on Sunday thanks to Manchester United’s shock defeat to rock-bottom West Bromwich Albion, and bookmaker William Hill is backing them to successfully defend their crown during the 2018/19 season.

City were forced to put the champagne on ice as they squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at home to Manchester United just over a week ago, but they bounced back in impressive fashion to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on Saturday night and that meant United had to take something from their home game against West Brom to make Pep Guardiola’s side wait a little longer for the title.

However, they crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat to the rock-bottom Baggies at Old Trafford, with Jay Rodriguez getting the only goal of the game, and that was enough to give City an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League table.

With the title ‘race’ now over, bookmakers are already looking ahead to the 2018/19 campaign and William Hill is expecting Manchester City – who have dominated the top flight this season – to be celebrating once again in a year’s time.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions are 8/13 to finish top of the league next season, with Manchester United considered their main rivals at odds of 5/1.

“Manchester City have impressed so much in the league, but fallen short in cup competitions,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.

“It is almost certain that they will strengthen in the summer in order to compete on a number of fronts and they are the clear favourites to win next season.”

Liverpool have emerged as contenders at 6/1 though, having beaten Manchester City three times this season (once in the league and twice in the Champions League), while Chelsea are out at 10/1 following a dismal defence of the title they won last season.

Tottenham are 11/1 to end their long wait to be crowned kings of English football once again, while a miserable 2017/18 campaign has resulted in Arsenal being priced out at 20/1 – the biggest price they have been since the 1988/89 season when they famously beat Liverpool at Anfield on the final day to snatch the championship from under the noses of the Reds on goals scored!
