Usually in this biennial tournament, three Premier League clubs are joined by a local team but on this occasion all four contenders have made the long journey from England to Hong Kong, the others being Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion who contest the preceding semi-final.

First held in 2003, the Premier League Asia Trophy is being staged for the fourth time in Hong Kong with the other previous venues having been Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Beijing and Singapore.

Only Liverpool have prior experience of the competition, finishing as runners-up to Portsmouth in 2007. The other previous winners are Chelsea (twice), Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Premier League Asia Trophy takes the format of semi-finals, final and a third-place play-off, with a three-day gap between the first and second matches each team will play.

Liverpool will hope to improve their inauspicious recent record against Crystal Palace, who have won on their last three visits to Anfield. This should be an entertaining game for the local spectators as both teams have scored in all of the last 10 meetings of the clubs.

It will be a second long-haul trip for Liverpool since the end of last season as they also went to Australia at the end of May for a friendly match against Sydney FC which they won 3-0.

Jurgen Klopp’s side began their pre-season preparations with a 4-0 win away to Tranmere Rovers thanks to penalties from James Milner and Ben Woodburn and further goals by Marko Grujic and Pedro Chirivella.

The Reds are also due to take part in the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena on August 1-2 in which the other teams involved are hosts Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan. Liverpool will play Bayern in their opening match of that tournament.

Crystal Palace appointed Frank de Boer as their new manager this summer following Sam Allardyce’s surprise resignation and the Dutchman’s first match in charge was away to Maidstone on Saturday July 15.

De Boer, whose first signing was midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on a season’s loan from Chelsea, will also get to run the rule over his squad in further friendly matches away to Metz and at home to Schalke when they return home from Hong Kong.
