Liverpool edge ahead of Man Utd in race to sign Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester United have repeatedly been linked with a summer swoop for Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, but have Premier League rivals Liverpool just stolen a march on them in the race to sign the talented defender?

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to shake up his squad during the summer transfer window and one of his key targets in this recruitment drive will be 19-year-old de Ligt, who played a key role in Ajax’s sensational run to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

As a result the Red Devils have been at short odds to capture the Dutch defender in recent weeks, and although they remain a leading contender for his signature at 4/1, bookmaker Betway and its punters believe another English top-flight has edged ahead of United in the fight to sign the player.

De Ligt has struck up a great partnership with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk in the Netherlands national team and following reports that the Reds would like to pair them up at club level too, punters have been getting behind a potential deal that would see the teenager snub Manchester United and head to Anfield instead.

This flurry of bets has forced Betway to slash its odds on de Ligt joining Liverpool this summer from 12/1 all the way into 3/1, meaning the European champions are now joint second favourites to land the defender alongside Paris St Germain.

Barcelona remain the favourites however, at 7/4 with the online bookmaker.

“Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt have formed a successful centre back partnership for Holland and there’s growing support in the betting for them do it on the club scene too,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com.

“We’ve seen a big move on Liverpool signing de Ligt over the weekend, with the 19-year-old now just 3/1 to join the European champions having been as big as 12/1 last week.

“A non-English move looks an option too with Barcelona the 7/4 favourites to sign the Ajax defender, while PSG have also been backed into 3/1 from 6/1.

“Manchester United were 9/4 and touted as a likely destination last week, but bets on a move to Old Trafford have cooled and that move is now priced at 4/1.”
