Lithuania v England Betting Tips Explained

Harry Kane's injury-time winner against Slovenia at Wembley in midweek secured England's place at next summer's World Cup finals but Gareth Southgate's side's display will hardly have the likes of Germany, Italy and Brazil trembling with fear.

England's performance was best summed up by the BCC's Chief football writer Phil McNulty who described it as 'lifeless, uninspired and mediocre', and who could argue? Certainly not the supporters who witnessed that abysmal spectacle at the home of football and who made their feelings abundantly clear with sections of the crowd more than a little scathing in their criticism from the stands.

Qualification for a major championships are usually celebrated with much fanfare, but on this occasion the celebrations were rather muted, although now England are presented with an opportunity to redeem themselves and at least give their fans some hope that they won't be faced in Russia with a repeat of their Euro 2016 debacle when they exited the competition at the hands of unfancied Iceland in the last 16. But can they do it?

It seems unlikely that England are going to produce a swashbuckling creative performance and it's likely that Southgate will be more concerned about preparing for their November friendlies with world champions Germany and Brazil where positive results would certainly lift the mood of the England faithful.

That said, we don't expect Lithuania to unduly trouble an England side who remain unbeaten in Group F with seven wins and two draws to their name. It should be noted that Southgate's charges have conceded just three goals to date in this campaign and are top scorers in the group with 17. So a clean sheet in Lithuania is looking good as is England to win to nil.

What is worrying from an England standpoint is their lack of goals in comparison to other major European nations. For example, after nine games in Group C Germany have netted 38 times while second placed Northern Ireland in that group have scored the same number as England with a vastly inferior squad and pool of talent to choose from.

We are looking at another low scoring game then and England/Under 2.5 goals looks a decent punt given the nature of England's journey on the road to Russia 2018 thus far.
