Ligue 1 predictions for the weekend of Saturday, May 18. Will Lyon secure a top-three finish and a place in next season’s Champions League, or could Caen spring an upset to boost their last-dash bid for survival? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

Lille v Angers

Lille are on the brink of enjoying their best season in the French top flight for eight years. A positive result in either of their final two games will be enough to secure second place and although there are now trophies for being the runners-up in France, it is still a good effort when you consider money-bags Paris St Germain are going to run away with the title each and every season until they lose their investment or somebody else starts pumping vast sums of cash into another club. But that is a pointless discussion when it comes to Saturday’s game – the simple question is can Lille secure second place by avoiding defeat in their final home match of the season? Of course they can. They may not have strung together back-to-back wins in Ligue 1 since early March, but Lille have now won four of their last five games at home and they have been excellent at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy all season long, with only PSG boasting a better home record in the top flight. Visitors Angers have been decent on the road, but Lille do not drop many points at home and they do not concede many there either. Lille to win to nil is often a winning bet when they are victorious and I expect that to be the case again on Saturday.

Lyon v Caen

Lyon moved themselves to within touching distance of a top-three finish with an excellent 3-0 victory at Marseille a week ago, taking their unbeaten run to four games. Bruno Genesio’s side have now taken 10 points from their last four games, with their only dropped points coming against second-place Lille, and that impressive haul means they are within touching distance of ensuring that they are playing Champions League football once again next season. Four points is separating them and fourth-place St Etienne heading into the penultimate round of fixtures and that means third place, at worst, will be theirs if they can beat relegation-threatened Caen. But can they? Caen’ remain in the bottom three heading into this weekend, but they have burst into life to take 10 points from their last four games and they are now in the relegation zone on goal difference. That makes this clash huge for them and it does make Caen tougher opposition than they look, but ultimately I cannot back a relegation-threatened team to beat a top-three team that are in solid form and do not lose many at home. Lyon will take this, but they have found clean sheets hard to come by recently and Caen did score twice when the two clubs met last September. They could net again in a losing effort here.

St Etienne v Nice

St Etienne’s quest for a top-three finish was all-but ended by last weekend’s surprise home defeat at the hands of Montpellier. Les Verts do not often lose on their own turf, but they did when it mattered most and now their main aim must be to ensure they at least finish fourth and earn a place in next season’s Europa League. But will they? Visitors Nice have lost only one of their last eight games, but they have found victories hard to come by since the start of 2019 and they have now won only one of their last 12 away games in all competitions. They have been struggling for goals on their travels too, so backing St Etienne to win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 offers plenty of temptation – that has been a winning bet on three of the home side’s last four victories and five of their last eight home wins in all competitions.
