Usually in this biennial tournament, three Premier League clubs are joined by a local team but on this occasion all four contenders have made the long journey from England to Hong Kong, the others being Liverpool and Crystal Palace who contest the second semi-final straight afterwards.

First held in 2003, the Premier League Asia Trophy is being staged for the fourth time in Hong Kong with the other previous venues having been Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Beijing and Singapore.

Only Liverpool have prior experience of the competition, finishing as runners-up to Portsmouth in 2007. The other previous winners are Chelsea (twice), Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Premier League Asia Trophy takes the format of semi-finals, final and a third-place play-off, with a three-day gap between the first and second matches each team will play.

The first match is between Midlands rivals Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion, who both recorded a victory away from home in their two meetings last season.

West Brom won 2-1 at the King Power Stadium thanks to goals from James Morrison and Matt Phillips, with Islam Slimani netting for the Foxes, while a solitary Jamie Vardy contribution was enough to earn three points for the 2015-16 champions in the return match at The Hawthorns.

Leicester, who this summer confirmed Craig Shakespeare as their permanent manager, are starting their 2017-18 preparations comparatively late but will then cram seven friendly matches into the space of 17 days.

After arriving home from Hong Kong, the Foxes make shorter journeys to Luton Town, MK Dons, Wolves and Burton Albion before hosting Borussia Monchengladbach on August 4.

Defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Vicente Iborra have been signed by Leicester during the close season for combined fees of £32million, while West Brom’s first addition was striker Jay Rodriguez from Southampton.

The Baggies began pre-season with a 2-1 defeat to Slavia Prague at their training camp in Austria, their goal scored by James McClean, and their other warm-up games, all away from home, are against Burton Albion, Walsall, Bristol Rovers, Port Vale and, in the Teresa Herrera Cup match, Deportivo La Coruna.
