Legia Warsaw v Rangers

FC Midtjylland were supposed to provide Rangers with their first real test of their Europa League qualifying campaign – if that was a test then the blue half of Glasgow passed it with flying colours. The Gers had exorcised a few demons when they dispatched Progres Niederkorn in the previous round, but the results in both legs were largely underwhelming and their league opener at Kilmarnock threatened to be a case of ‘same old, same old at Rugby Park’ before Connor Goldson popped up with a bullet header to snatch all three points.

Therefore it was not a major surprise that there were a few question marks hanging over Rangers when they visited Denmark for the first leg of their third round qualifier, but they erased most of those questions with an impressive performance that saw them rattle in four goals and return to Glasgow with a commanding lead. They then followed up that fine victory with a 6-1 demolition of Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, setting them up nicely for the return game with FC Midtjylland at Ibrox. Having seen Celtic choke on home soil in the Champions League 48 hours earlier, Steven Gerrard’s men knew the tie was far from over and they once again produced an excellent performance to run out deserving winners, 3-1 on the night and 7-3 on aggregate.

Some observers have since tried to play down how impressive Rangers were over the two legs, but the simple fact is, at the time of writing, FC Midtjylland boast a 100% record in Denmark’s top flight with five wins from five games, and they have conceded just one goal too. This is also a team that shocked Manchester United in this competition a few years ago, before being routed in the return meeting at Old Trafford, so this was a solid test for Rangers and it is one they passed with aplomb.

It will not get any easier in the play-offs though, with Polish side Legia Warsaw now standing between Rangers and a place in the group stage of the Europa League. Aleksandar Vukovic’s side have lost only one of their nine competitive games so far this season, keeping seven clean sheets, and they have been beaten at home on only three occasions in this calendar year. However, their recent form has not been massively inspiring. While they have been racking up clean sheets they have now failed to score in three of their last four games, with two of them taking place at home, and they have been unconvincing in getting this far in Europa League qualifying, winning half of their games while recording three goalless draws.

Rangers would be foolish to take them lightly and that solid defence suggests they will not be easy to breach, but the visitors head to Poland in excellent form and they have been scoring for fun in recent weeks. My only concern is the seemingly habitual dips that Rangers have – they can be in control of a game and then suddenly switch off to make life difficult for themselves. They have been guilty of it several times this season and have, so far, been able to get away with it. That luck will run out, but perhaps it will not run out here. It will not be easy, but Rangers have enough about them to return home with a first-leg lead. The less convinced should consider going Rangers Draw No Bet.
