League One predictions for Saturday, March 23. Can Doncaster Rovers finally bring an end to Luton Town’s incredible unbeaten run in League One, and will Barnsley and Portsmouth boost their bids for promotion to the Championship? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

Walsall v Barnsley (12:00 GMT)

Barnsley remain second in the table and on course for automatic promotion back to the Championship, but they must be kicking themselves because back-to-back goalless draws have prevented them from capitalising on league leaders Luton Town’s recent dip in results. The Tykes are unbeaten in their last 18 league fixtures though, with their only defeat since early December coming against Premier League opposition in the FA Cup, so nobody in the camp will be pressing the panic button just now. They will be desperate to return to winning ways in front of the television cameras on Saturday though, but can they leave Walsall with all three points? While Barnsley have been enjoying a solid run of form, the Saddlers have lost back-to-back games against top-four sides to leave themselves back in the relegation zone, and a big reason for their struggles this season has been their poor form at home. Barnsley have been guilty of dropping points on their travels, but they do have one of the better away records in the third tier so I am going to back them here.

Luton Town v Doncaster Rovers (15:00 GMT)

Luton Town have managed to take their phenomenal unbeaten run in the league to 25 games in recent weeks, but are they beginning to falter in their push for promotion? The Hatters have now dropped points in three of their last five games and those home stalemates against Coventry City and Gillingham have been massively disappointing. They have been fortunate that their rivals have not taken full advantage of those results, but with only five points now separating them from the chasing pack the pressure is suddenly back on them to start stringing together some wins, starting with Saturday’s visit of Doncaster Rovers. Rovers head south on the back of a decent goalless draw with Barnsley that kept them in the play-off places, but the South Yorkshire club has now gone six games without a victory in the league and that is threatening to derail their promotion quest. Four of those outings have been on the road, where they have been hit-and-miss all season, so despite Luton’s recent dip I do have confidence in a team that have been excellent at home this season, winning 14 and drawing five of their 19 league games at Kenilworth Road while out-scoring the opposition 46-14. I believe the Hatters will return to winning ways here and they will do it by a couple of goals.

Shrewsbury Town v Portsmouth (15:00 GMT)

Portsmouth have taken advantage of Luton and Barnsley’s recent stumbles to close the gap between themselves and the top two to just four points heading into this crucial part of the season. Last weekend’s 2-0 success against Scunthorpe United made it three wins in four outings for Pompey, but they really do need to make it four from five this weekend. The question is can they do it? Hosts Shrewsbury Town boosted their battle against the drop with a much-needed win over Wycombe Wanderers last time out, and they have been in good form at home over the past few weeks, going four matches unbeaten at the Meadow while collecting eight points. They do not have a great home record against promotion-chasing sides though, having lost 3-0 at home to both Charlton Athletic and Luton Town since the start of the year, so I am backing a Portsmouth side that boasts the best away record in the third tier at this time.
