League One predictions for Saturday, January 12. Can Portsmouth maintain their healthy lead at the top of League One, and who will win the big clash between promotion hopefuls Sunderland and Luton Town? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

Barnsley v Bradford City

Barnsley’s promotion push suffered a setback when they ended November with a 4-2 defeat at Sunderland and started December with a 1-0 loss at Wycombe Wanderers, but they responded well over the hectic festive period by embarking on a five-match unbeaten run in the league that saw them win three times and hold the top two to draws. However, if they want automatic promotion this season they simply have to keep this good run going and Saturday’s visit of Bradford City has to be considered a must-win outing. So can they win it? The Bantams find themselves in the relegation zone at this time, but they are currently enjoying their best run of form this season – a sequence that has them on the brink of exiting the bottom three. Bradford have won four of their last five games to breathe life into their survival fight, and during that time the goals have flowed with their four victories producing a combined 13 goals. They did recently lose at Sunderland though and they have struggled for goals against sides in the top five, so I cannot go against a Barnsley team that are yet to lose a league game at Oakwell this season. Therefore I am backing the Tykes to claim all three points here, with a clean sheet being the icing on the cake.

Sunderland v Luton Town

This match pits second versus third and could have major implications on who earns automatic promotion to the Championship this season. Luton Town currently occupy second place in the table, a point ahead of their hosts, but they have dropped points in each of their last two outings to present Sunderland with an opportunity to close the gap. The Black Cats have managed to do that by extending their unbeaten run in the league to four games, but they remain unconvincing at home having dropped points in five of their 12 games at the Stadium of Light. The Hatters, meanwhile, are riding a 13-match unbeaten run in the league that has seen them routinely pick up points on their travels, and I believe they will return home on Saturday with something to show for their efforts. The question is, how many points will it be? Would I be shocked to see Luton come away with all three points? Not really. However, Sunderland are yet to lose a league game in front of the home fans this season and that is something I cannot ignore. Therefore I am backing this match to end in a stalemate and if both clubs were being honest, they would probably be content with that result.

Portsmouth v Blackpool

Portsmouth pulled off one of the surprises of the FA Cup third round last weekend as they won 1-0 at Championship side Norwich City, so confidence in the camp will be sky high as they prepare to resume their promotion push this weekend. Pompey have rebounded from the shock defeat at bogey side Gillingham on Boxing Day to win back-to-back league fixtures, and they have now lost just two of their last 14 matches in the third tier. That puts them in good stead for a meeting with a Blackpool side that have been sliding down the table in recent weeks due to a five-match winless run that has produced just one point. The Seasiders were looking like dark horses for the play-offs heading into late November, but that optimism has been dampened considerably by their slump in form and I do not see it ending against Portsmouth here. The home side should win and I expect to see a couple of goals too – Over 1.5 Total Goals has been a winning bet on each of Portsmouth’s last eight home games and 12 of their last 14 competitive fixtures.
