League One predictions for Saturday, December 8. Will Portsmouth maintain their four-point cushion at the summit and can both Sunderland and Luton Town keep the pressure on the league leaders? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

Accrington Stanley v Sunderland

Sunderland’s form has dipped in recent weeks with three draws coming in their last four games in all competitions prior to the midweek EFL Trophy game against Notts County, but that has been enough to help them climb to second in the League One table behind Portsmouth. The Black Cats will now have their sights set on hauling in the league leaders in the coming weeks as the hectic festive period draws near, but can they keep the heat on Pompey by claiming all three points at Accrington Stanley on Saturday?

Accrington’s early season form was one of the big talking points in League One as it put them in the promotion mix, but the third-tier minnows have been dealt something of a reality check in recent weeks and that has resulted in them sliding down the table. They were able to halt a four-game losing run in all competitions by beating League Two side Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup last weekend, but they have now lost three straight in the league while going six games without a win. That does not bode well for this meeting with a Sunderland side who have been travelling well.

Luton Town v Fleetwood Town

Luton Town are one of the hottest teams in League One right now having gone seven games without defeat, winning six of them. The goals have been flying in, with the Hatters out-scoring the opposition 12-2 across their last three games, so confidence in the camp is sky high as they remain hot on the heels of the top two. But can they keep their excellent run going this weekend or will their automatic promotion push suffer a setback against a Fleetwood Town side that have pulled off some surprise results this season?

Fleetwood cruised to a 3-0 victory over promotion hopefuls Coventry City a couple of weeks ago and they have recorded some dominant victories on their travels by thrashing the likes of Scunthorpe United 5-0 and Doncaster Rovers 4-0, while also drawing 1-1 at Sunderland. It is hard to look past Luton though – they boast the best home record in League One with eight wins and two draws coming in 10 games and they are now joint top scorers in the division, which is a good thing because they have one of the worst goals against records in the top six. There is a recipe for goals here, and ultimately Luton should score most of them.

Portsmouth v Southend United

Portsmouth maintained top spot in the division with a 2-0 win over Walsall a week ago, and they have now won three straight games in the third tier to extend their unbeaten run to seven games. Prior to the midweek EFL Trophy clash with Arsenal U21s the were also unbeaten in their last 11 in all competitions, losing only once in the last 22, so there is a real feeling that they are on their way back up after several years in the wilderness of the English Football League. But can they keep the momentum going this weekend?

Southend United are the visitors to Fratton Park and they arrive in poor form. Last weekend they fell to a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Barnsley in the FA Cup and while they did win their most recent league game at Scunthorpe United, the Shrimpers had lost their previous four League One games. They have managed to take something from half of their away games this season, but they have tended to be ‘win or bust’ on their travels and that makes it hard to have any confidence in them here. Portsmouth have developed a healthy knack for leading at half-time and going on to win games in recent months, so I am predicting more of the same here by backing them in the Half-time/Full-time market.
