The 2017-18 La Liga season has reached the halfway stage and its 20th round of matches on the weekend of January 19-22, and we have picked out the best bet available on each of Saturday’s five games.

Espanyol v Sevilla – Draw @ 23/10 with BetVictor (12:00 GMT kick-off)

Sevilla’s away form this season has been really disappointing, seven defeats in 10 league matches, and even though they are eight positions ahead of Espanyol in the table, the bookmakers are struggling to identify a favourite for this match.

Espanyol have improved of late with manager Quique Sanchez Flores clearly encouraged enough to reject the Stoke job, and although Sevilla’s results have been erratic recently we think this has the look of a game in which they will register the first away draw of their La Liga campaign.

Atletico Madrid v Girona – Both teams to score @ 27/20 with SportingBet (15:15 GMT)

Atletico have been at their majestic best defensively over the last month or so, keeping six clean sheets out of seven, but Girona are just the sort of team who look capable of breaching that solidity.

Comfortably in mid-table in their first top-flight campaign, Girona dished out a 6-0 thrashing to Las Palmas last weekend when Kenyan striker Michael Olunga bagged a hat-trick and we expect the visitors to join Diego Simeone’s side in getting on the scoresheet here.

Deportivo La Coruna +3 on the handicap away to Real Madrid @ 9/10 with BetStars (15:15 GMT)

Going into Thursday’s Copa del Rey first leg against Leganes, the only team Real Madrid had beaten since returning from the Club World Cup was Segunda Division side Numancia and it is difficult to put too much faith in the misfiring European champions at present.

They may well, in fact probably will, win this game but even though Deportivo are in serious relegation trouble, it should be worth backing them to lose by no more than a two-goal margin.

Villarreal v Levante – Under 2.5 goals @ Evens with William Hill (17:30 GMT)

The key to this bet is Levante because unless they are playing one of the very top teams, they tend to keep things very tight on the road – they kept three consecutive away clean sheets in La Liga before going down 3-0 to Barcelona two weeks ago.

Villarreal’s matches tend not to be free-scoring either and backers of the ‘unders’ would have collected in seven of their last eight, so goals are expected to be at a premium here.

Las Palmas v Valencia – Away win and under 4.5 goals in the match @ 5/4 with BetStars (19:45 GMT)

For a club that looked to have consolidated in the top flight and made some ambitious signings last summer, this is proving to be a dreadful campaign for Las Palmas and relegation is starting to look inevitable as they are seven points from safety.

In contrast, Valencia are flying again after a pre-Christmas blip and although they were held 1-1 in Gran Canaria in the Copa del Rey recently before getting the job done on home soil, they are expected to triumph this time.

Factoring in there to be four goals or fewer pushes the odds above the even-money mark and makes Los Che much more backable.
