3 decades of dominance: How Man City have not lost to FA Cup Final opponents for 30 years

If Watford are to win the 2019 FA Cup Final they are going to have to do something they have not managed to do since March 4, 1989 – beat Manchester City in a competitive fixture!

Facing City has become an incredibly difficult task over the past few years and no club has struggled against them more than Watford, who have not got the better of the blue half of Manchester since recording a 1-0 victory in the old Division Two (now known as the Championship) just over 30 years ago.

Since that day these two clubs have gone head-to-head on 15 occasions thanks to a combination of league games and FA Cup ties, and the statistics make for truly miserable reading if you are a Watford fan because they have lost 13, drawn twice, scored nine and conceded 41 times!

If you want to narrow it down to the Pep Guardiola era at City, the facts and figures are even uglier if you are associated with the Hornets.

Watford and Manchester City have met six times since the Spaniard arrived at the Etihad Stadium and he has enjoyed victories in each one of those encounters. And just to emphasise his team’s dominance of this fixture, City have out-scored the Hornets 21-3 during this time!

I guess if you want to find some inspiration you could look to the fact that Watford have scored in each of their last three meetings with Manchester City, while if you rewind back to the 2013 final you will remember Wigan Athletic stunning the Citizens 1-0 in the FA Cup Final just days before they were relegated to the Championship.

So perhaps all is not lost if you are a Watford fan, but with all of those facts and figures in mind it is no shock to see Manchester City being made the 1/10 favourites To Lift The Trophy by Paddy Power. Watford, meanwhile, are 6/1 to somehow end this gigantic hoodoo in the best possible fashion by denying Guardiola and his men silverware in their final match of the 2018/19 campaign.

So will we see more of the same in the 2019 FA Cup Final on May 18? If your answer to that question is ‘yes’, then here are some statistics and Manchester City v Watford betting markets that may interest you…
