Man City or Man Utd: Who will win race to sign England star Harry Maguire?

Manchester rivals City and United are expected to go head-to-head in the race to sign England defender Harry Maguire this summer, but who will win the battle for the big centre-back?

Maguire played a starring role in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals a year ago, earning him the attention of Manchester United, but Leicester City held firm in the face of interest from the Red Devils and the player himself showed loyalty to his employers to stay put for the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign.

However, 26-year-old defender continued to add to his burgeoning reputation with his performances for both club and country throughout the season, and once again the bookmakers predict both his and Leicester’s resolve will be tested between now and the close of the summer transfer window.

But this time they expect more than one Manchester club will look to turn Maguire’s head.

Manchester City have reportedly joined the race to land the man nicknamed ‘Slabhead’ by his team-mates, with Pep Guardiola on the hunt for a new centre-back after seeing talismanic skipper Vincent Kompany leave for the player/manager’s job at Anderlecht after helping guide City to a domestic treble last season.

Guardiola was impressed with Maguire’s performance during City’s slender 1-0 win over Leicester last month and reportedly sees him as an ideal addition because not only will he add more quality to his team’s defence, he will also boost the homegrown contingent within the first-team squad.

If City do make an official play for the defender then bookmaker William Hill believes the lure of joining the treble-winners will be too strong for Maguire to turn down, and as a result the bookmaker has made Manchester City the 10/11 favourites to capture his signature before the close of the summer transfer window.

United, meanwhile, have drifted out to 5/2 to finally get their man in what appears to be a two-horse race, with the next clubs in the betting, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, right out at 16/1 ahead of European champions Liverpool, who are 25/1 amid reports they will make a move for Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt this summer.
