Groningen FC v Ajax AFC betting tips

Ajax look a very big price to beat FC Groningen in the Dutch Cup fourth round on Thursday evening.

Recommending Ajax in Holland is a bit like recommending Manchester United in England. It's hardly an innovative pick and it's usually unlikely to offer too much in the way of value but sometimes even obvious picks can have surprisingly good prices and that is the case when Ajax face Groningen on Thursday evening.

The Dutch champions are currently on a six match winning streak in domestic competition and in that period they have also sealed a place in the Europa League, which looked beyond them when they were drawn against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City. There is, therefore, a positive feel around the Amsterdam Arena and Frank de Boer will be desperate to keep that going into the new year. A cup exit just before Christmas would be a disaster.

By contrast, Groningen are probably pretty happy to see the back of 2012 and don't have much to look forward to for 2013. Their run of good results at the start of last season is now a distant memory and even their previously solid home form has deserted them, with just two wins from nine in front of their own fans this term.

It is, therefore, a surprise to see Ajax as big as 8/11 with Coral to win in the Euroborg on Thursday. The champions were utterly dominant when beating their opponents 2-0 in Amsterdam a fortnight ago and, although Groningen are marginally better at home than away, there is little that has changed in the intervening weeks to suggest a turnaround. Christian Eriksen and Siem de Jong should still control the midfield and dictate the tempo while Groningen, who are the Eredivisie's third lowest scorers, will struggle again to make any in-roads towards their opponents' goal. It should be comfortable for the visitors and those who are willing to be a little more adventurous may be able to prosper from a generous 17/10 from Paddy Power that Ajax win by two or more.
