REVEALED: Find out who bookies are backing to replace Vincent Kompany at Man City

Vincent Kompany’s trophy-laden stint at Manchester City will come to an end this summer, but who will the club turn to as they look to replace their inspirational skipper?

Kompany has been a mainstay of the City defence for several years and not only has his presence at the back been key to their sensational treble-winning season, he also had a major impact at the other end as his blistering winner against Leicester City pretty much wrapped up the title.

The 33-year-old Belgian was coy about his future when quizzed by the media in the wake of Saturday’s 6-0 rout of Watford in the FA Cup Final, but the press now have their answer after it was confirmed on Monday that he is moving on in order to become player-manager of Anderlecht in his native Belgium.

“We've just seen the close of an incredible season,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “My 11th as a Blue. And I cannot believe I'm writing this but ... also my last as a Blue.

“Countless of times have I imagined this day, after all, the end has felt nearby for so many years. It still doesn't feel real. Man City has given me everything. I've tried to give back as much as I possibly could. How often does someone get the chance to end such an important chapter, representing a club with such great history and tradition, in such a great fashion?

“The time has come for me to go now. As overwhelming as it is, I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club.”

Kompany’s departure will leave a massive hole in the Manchester City defence and the big question is who will be tasked with filling it?

The treble-winners will almost certainly dive into the transfer market to find the veteran centre-back’s replacement and both the media and bookmakers believe they will turn to a star of England’s 2018 World Cup campaign and successful run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

Harry Maguire has long been linked with a move to Manchester United, but following reports that City are now keen on the Leicester City defender they have stolen a march on their neighbours in the betting.

‘Slabhead’, as he is affectionately nicknamed, is now 7/4 with Betway to be a Manchester City player by the close of the summer transfer window, while Manchester United are now considered 5/1 shots to capture his signature ahead of 6/1 Tottenham Hotspur.

“Vincent Kompany’s departure has left a hole in the centre of Manchester City’s defence and it looks as if Pep Guardiola has turned his attentions to signing Leicester’s Harry Maguire,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com.

“The Premier League winners are the clear favourites to sign the England centre-half, with Manchester United and Tottenham their closest pursuers.”
