FC Porto v Liverpool Betting Tips Explained

The Champions League represents Liverpool’s last chance to win silverware this season, but only the most ardent of supporters will believe they can go all the way in this competition. The Reds return to European action on Wednesday night when they head to Portugal to face FC Porto in the first leg of this last-16 tie, and they go there in decent form having bounced back from the shock FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion by sandwiching a draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur with away victories at Huddersfield Town and Southampton.

However, FC Porto are a step up from the Terriers and Saints. The Portuguese league leaders stumbled out of the blocks in this competition as they fell to a surprise home defeat at the hands of Besiktas, but they did rebound to win three of their final five matches to book their place in the last-16, and they go into this match in strong form having lost only one of their last 24 competitive fixtures, winning 19 of them. They have been particularly dominant at home, winning each of their last eight home games while going 15 matches without a defeat in front of the home supporters, so Liverpool face a stiff test here.

And while Liverpool, on their day, can be an irresistible force going forward, I am not convinced they will pass this test. They managed only one away win during the group stage of this competition and they have now dropped points on their travels on six occasions in the Premier League – that sort of record does not look appealing when taking on a Porto team that have been rock-solid at home for several months now. However, Liverpool did avoid defeats in those two group matches they failed to win, so I do like their chances of returning home on level terms.

The odds on the draw are appealing, but I am looking for a bigger return so I recommend backing the draw & both teams to score. Porto managed just one clean sheet during the group stage of this competition and that does not bode well for a meeting with a Liverpool side that have failed to score in only two their last 25 competitive outings. However, the Reds are not exactly renowned for rock-solid defending despite keeping clean sheets in their last couple of victories, so you have to believe they will concede against a Porto side that have failed to score in only two of their competitive home fixtures this season.

And on the subject of goals, my second pick for this match has to be backing Mohamed Salah to score anytime. The Egyptian striker has been in devastating form during his first season on Merseyside and his goal against Southampton at the weekend took his tally for the season to 29 goals in all competitions. Salah’s goalless showings have been few and far between, so every time he steps out onto the field he is a huge goal threat. Therefore I would not be remotely surprised to see him take his tally for the campaign to 30 goals by netting for the seventh time in this season’s Champions League.
