Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer betting odds & tips – 8/1 Muller can upstage Zlatan & Ronaldo

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo have been rattling in goals and collecting accolades in recent seasons, but could one of them leave Euro 2016 with the Golden Boot this summer?

What can be said about Real Madrid star Ronaldo that has not already been said? The man has been prolific in front of goal ever since trading Manchester for Madrid, and prior to the Champions League Final the Portuguese had netted a staggering 52 goals in all competitions during the 2015/16 campaign. However, international accolades have eluded Ronaldo over the years, with a lack of assists denying him the Euro 2012 Golden Boot after he finished level with winner Fernando Torres. So will this be Ronaldo’s year?

Ladbrokes is 8/1 about him winning the Golden Boot, while the odds on Paris St Germain striker Ibrahimovic are even longer. Ibrahimovic has cemented his status as one of the best strikers in European football thanks to his scoring exploits at club level over the past few years, but Sweden’s failings have denied him the opportunity to make an impact on the biggest stages in international football. The Swedes will be heading to France this summer though, but at 33/1 bet365 do not expect Ibrahimovic to add the Euro 2016 Golden Boot to his list of career accomplishments.

France striker Antoine Griezmann is a tempting option at 10/1 with BetVictor following a goal-laden campaign for Atletico Madrid, while England’s Harry Kane is 16/1 at William Hill alongside Poland forward Robert Lewandowski and France’s Oliver Giroud. Romelu Lukaku is a 20/1 shot with the firm as many bookmakers consider Belgium possible candidates to go all the way.

However, for me the man to back in the Golden Boot betting has to be Thomas Muller – who is Paddy Power's favourite at 8/1. The German World Cup winner has been incredibly consistent for club and country in recent years and he goes into this tournament having enjoyed a career-best season for Bayern Munich, scoring 32 goals in all competitions.

But Muller is not simply a man who performs at his best at club level, he has also delivered routinely for the national team since forcing himself into the senior team several years ago. His five-goal haul was enough to land him the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and while he missed out on the award by one goal four years later, his five-goal showing in Brazil played a key role in Germany leaving Brazil as world champions.

Muller has not rested on his laurels since then either. During qualifying for Euro 2016 he scored no less than nine goals as Germany won their group, with only club team-mate Robert Lewandowski managing more goals. However, the Germans will almost certainly play more games than most nations in this summer’s tournament – I fancy them to go all the way – and that means Muller will have plenty of opportunities to keep his red-hot run going. At 7/1, he is an outstanding Top Goalscorer bet!
